تعليم اللغة العربية في جامعات نيجيريا : اتجاهات وتحديات واقتراحات
    (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2013)
    'Abd Al-Wahab Salah Al-Din
The existence of Arabic Studies as a discipline in Nigerian universities can be traced back to 1961 when the authority of University of Ibadan inaugurated the Department of Arabic and lslamic Studies.followed by the one inaugurated in Bairo University, Kano in 1964, it was then a satellite campus for Ahmadu Bello University, 'Zaria. That was the way the Arabic discipline sprang up gradually in other Universities in the country till we have presently about 20 Universities that run the program. However, the Nigerian Universities can be categorized into two categories based 011 the method adopted while inculcating Arabic knowledge. skills and ideas in students; the first category adopted Eastern method which makes students competent in all aspects of Arabic studies while the second category adopted Western method which promotes English studies on expense of Arabic education. It is generally observed that Arabic studies face a lot of challenges in our dear Universities which are related to environmemal i11j711e11ce, mood of admitting students into Arabic department and syllabus. it is time for Arabic scholar to vigorously tackle the problems by reviewing the mood of admitting students in order to adjust for equity and quality in our educational system, updating rhe syllabus to encompass contempora1y issues and creating 1•ario11s Arabic activities that 1nll immensely enhance the skills of Arabic students. It is apparently known that students of today are lecturers of tomorrow . It is, therefore, realized that what we offer them today is what they dispatch tomorrow.
