Publication Addition of Zygomatic Arch resection in Decompressive Craniectomy(Elsevier BV, 2015-04) ;Arvind G. Martin ;Johari Yap Abdullah ;Azlan Jaafar ;Abdul Rahman Izaini Ghani ;Zainul A. RajionJafri Malin AbdullahDecompressive craniectomy (DC) is a surgical option in managing uncontrolled raised intracranial pressure refractory to medical therapy. The authors evaluate the addition of zygomatic arch (ZA) resection with standard DC and analyze the resulting increase in brain volume using three-dimensional volumetric CT scans. Measurements of brain expansion dimension morphometrics from CT images were also analyzed. Eighteen patients were selected and underwent DC with ZA resection. The pre- and post-operative CT images were analyzed for volume and dimensional changes. CT images of 29 patients previously operated on at the same center were retrieved from the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and were similarly studied. The findings obtained from the two groups were compared and analyzed. Analysis from three-dimensional CT volumetric techniques revealed an significant increase of 27.97 ml (95% confidence interval [CI]: 39.98–180.36; p = 0.048) when compared with standard DC. Brain expansion analysis of maximum hemicraniectomy diameter revealed a mean difference of 0.82 cm (95% CI: 0.25–1.38; p = 0.006). Analysis of the ratio of maximum hemicraniectomy diameter to maximum anteroposterior diameter gave a mean difference of 0.04 (95% CI: 0.05–0.07; p = 0.026). The addition of ZA resection to standard DC may prove valuable in terms of absolute brain volume gain. This technique is comparable to other maneuvers used to provide maximum brain expansion in the immediate postoperative period. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication The Effect of Music in Reducing Patient's Anxiety Towards Dental Treatment(Academic Inspired Network, 2020) ;Ahmad Dzulfikar Bin Samsudin ;Azlan Jaafar ;Nurul Huda Mohd AnasNur Farhanim Abdol SukorIt is a universal phenomenon people avoid going to see the dentist because of anxiety and fear. Theory suggests that music has an ability to decrease the level of stress, pain, and anxiety by diverting the patient’s attention from the source of unpleasing stimuli. This study was design to assess the effect of listening to background music and patient’s anxiety level during dental treatment. Sixty patients were randomly divided into a fast beat music group (n=15), slow beat music group (n=15), spiritual music group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). After listening to music for 15 minutes, dental procedures such as anaesthetic injection or drilling sounds were introduced. Patient’s blood pressure and heart rate were recorded before, during and after exposure to music intervention. Result revealed that there were no significant effect of music in reducing the anxiety level among the patients except for postsystolic blood pressure was significantly higher in spiritual music group compared to no music group (p= 0.047). These finding suggest that listening to music and different type of music does not have any effect on patient’s anxiety level in dental setting. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Effects Of Impacted Lower Third Molar Removal On Alveolar Bone Height And Periodontal Parameters On Adjacent Second Molar(Ektodermal Displazi Grubu, 2020) ;Wan Nur Alwani Wan Abdul Aziz ;Azlan JaafarAhmad Dzulfikar SamsudinThe effect of surgical third molar removal on the periodontal parameters at distal sites of second molar revealed inconsistent results.Clinical parameters and radiographic parameter; alveolar bone height (ABH) were studied between six to 24 months post-surgery. Thirty-three subjects who had mesio-angular or horizontal impaction of third molar with available previous records of digital orthopantomogram (OPG) were recruited into the study. ABH of adjacent second molar on the previous OPG were compared with the current OPG. Probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), recession (REC) were also recorded. ABH distal to second molar showed significant improvement as shown in reduced cementoenamel junction to alveolar bone crest (CEJ-ABC) distance from 4.3mm±1.9 pre-operative to 2.80mm±2.05 post-operative (p<0.001). No significant difference was found in ABH between 47 and 37 at baseline;(4.09±1.09mm vs 4.30±2.55mm) and post-surgery (3.00±2.20mm vs 2.70±2.35mm) where p<0.423. Distal sites of second molars consistently showed significantly higher mean PPD (3.76±1.32mm) when compared with mesial, mid buccal and mid lingual sites (p<0.001).Higher frequency of BOP(90.9%) were also recorded for distal sites. Surgical removal of impacted third molars demonstrated significant gain in ABH of second molar post surgically. Significantly deeper PPD were also recorded at distal sites as compared to other sites. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Evaluation on the perception of final year dental students on their confidence level regarding endodontic treatments a cross sectional analysis(IIUM faculty of dentistry, 2022-03) ;Aws Hashim Ali Al-Kadhim ;Awathif Nor Azan ;Muaz Muhammad Salim ;Sarah Taha Yousif Al-AniAzlan JaafarEndodontics procedures are difficult and complicated that most of the practitioners would encounter. Therefore, dental students should gain their confidence and competent during their training. This research aimed to study the perception of final year students on confidence level regarding endodontic treatments from all public universities and their opinions on the quality of endodontic education. A Google Form was used to disseminate an online questionnaire to all dental students from public universities across Malaysia. The survey included both scaled answer and open-ended questions. 184 responses out of 235 students, were obtained (response rate = 78%). Perception of competence and confidence were significantly greater amongst the students from research-based universities group (P < 0.05). 93.5% (n=179) of participants agree that they were confident to do endodontic procedure on anterior tooth, whilst on posterior tooth, only 75.5% (n=139) were confident. Only 6.5 percent of participants (n = 12) did not feel confident doing root canal treatment on single-rooted teeth, but 76.1 percent (n = 140) did not feel competent performing root canal treatment on multirooted teeth. Over 90% of the students rated the quality and the amount of time spent on endodontic education were adequate at their respective university as ?5 on a Likert scale (1 = inadequate to 10 = adequate). In addition, when they were asked to give the suggestion on how to improve the quality of endodontic education, 10.9% of the students suggested to increase the number of practical session and to do regular discussion regarding endodontic cases. It is vital to improve undergraduate endodontic education in order to raise students' perceptions of their confidence and competence when doing root canal therapy. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Experiences of Left-Handed Undergraduates in a Dental Faculty in Malaysia(Univ Sains Malaysia, SCH Dental Sciences, 2019) ;Wan Mohamad Nasir Wan Othman ;Azlan Jaafar ;Rahimah Abd Wahab ;Khairunnisa’ HarunAws Hashim AliWork environment in dentistry benefits the right-handed dental practitioners. This situation requires the left-handers to work in an adjusted position causing them discomfort and inconvenience. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of the identified left-handed undergraduate dental students in Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in performing dental procedures. The first phase of the study was to determine handedness of the students using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory Questionnaire that was distributed to all the dental students. This was followed by a qualitative study using the phenomenology approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on left-handed students to determine their perceptions on left-handedness in performing dental procedures. The number of students interviewed was based on attainment of the saturation point. The interview was recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analysed through coding, categorising and grouping responses into themes. Prevalence of left-handedness in this faculty was 7%. The participants were not aware of the right-handed situation when they enrolled in the faculty. This situation gave rise to psychological impact such as anxiety and stress. Although some participants were able to use their right hand for certain procedures, the dominant hand continued to be their preference. The difficulties encountered when using the non-dominant hand were grip-strength, angulation and positioning of the instruments. Dental procedures in periodontology (such as scaling, root debridement) and oral surgery (tooth extraction, incision and suturing) were found to be very challenging. They experienced muscle fatigue, reduced precision and prolonged time to complete the dental procedures. They felt that they should be given more time to adapt using the right hand under the tutelage of left-handed faculty members. Left-handed dental students faced difficulties in adapting to the right-handed situation and affect their effectiveness and efficiency. Specific activities need to be designed for left-handers to adapt to the situation under the guidance of left-handed faculty members. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Influence of Technical Quality and Coronal Restoration on Periapical Health of Root Canal Treatment Performed by Malaysian Undergraduate Students(Wolters Kluwer - Medknow, 2023) ;Norazlina Mohammad ;Faizah Abdul Fatah ;Azlan Jaafar ;Siti Hajar Omar ;Aimi Amalina Ahmad ;Abdul Azim Asy Abdul AzizAws Hashim Ali Al-KadhimIntroduction: Root canal treatment (RCT) and its coronal restoration should be regularly assessed to ensure a successful treatment outcome. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the relationship between the obturation technical quality and coronal restoration in the clinical and radiographic outcome of RCT provided by Malaysian undergraduate students. Materials and Methods: A total of 143 root-treated teeth from 136 patients were evaluated through clinical examinations and periapical radiographs with a mean follow-up period of 2.4 (standard deviation = 1.59) years. The quality of the coronal restoration was classified according to modified United States Public Health Service criteria and the technical quality of the obturation was assessed based on two variables: length and density. Periapical status was evaluated according to periapical index scores. Results: About 64% of the teeth were classified as healthy with a significant reduction of apical periodontitis from 70.3% preoperatively to 36% at reassessment (P < 0.001). About 92.1% of obturation was of acceptable length, whereas 5% underfilled and 2.9% overfilled. Teeth with acceptable obturation length were five times less likely associated with apical periodontitis than the inadequately filled ones. 90% of canals had adequate obturation density with no significant association to apical periodontitis. Teeth restored with intracoronal restorations had 50% more chance of developing apical periodontitis. Inadequately restored teeth and teeth with poor obturation quality were associated with three times more likely apical periodontitis occurrence. The quality of endodontic treatment and the coronal restoration significantly influenced the periapical status (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The radiographic obturation quality and coronal restorations of the RCTs performed by the undergraduate students in a Malaysian public dental school were acceptable in 63.8% of cases with a 64% favorable outcome. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Internalising The Principle Of Faith In Teaching-learning(Global Academic Excellence, 2019) ;Wan Mohamad Nasir Wan Othman ;Azlan Jaafar ;Nor Zaihana Abdul RahmanNorlela YacobIslam does not make any distinction between religiousity and secular matters. Muslims as servants and vicegerents of Allah are responsible for continually reaffirming their faith in all their activities. This includes teaching-learning as a principal role of a teacher and it encompasses classroom, laboratory, clinic and community engagement activities. The objective of this paper is to explore the application of the principles of faith in teaching-learning activities in a curriculum that integrates naqli and aqli knowledge. It adopts the qualitative research method involving a review of literature that is related to teaching methodology as well as studying the verses of the Quran and the parables of the hadith on faith. In general, teaching-learning sessionsconsist of three parts, namely the opening, the engagement with students and the closure. In internalising the principle of faith, teachers must start an activity by professing that Allah is the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful followed by greeting the students. Subsequently, they need to perform supplication in seeking guidance from Allah so that they can perform their tasks with excellence. When engaging with students, praises such as Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah and Maa sya Allah, as well as Astaghfirullah are reinforcements that can enhance repetition of a behaviour. The closure of a teaching-learning session must reinforce the belief in the superiority of Allah that only He knows best. This approach exemplifies the testimony of faith that Allah is one and continually strengthened in all our endeavours including teaching-learning. The concepts derived from this principle will be disseminated to all lecturers in this Faculty for implementation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Perception Of Malaysian Dental Practitioner On The Provisional Covid-19 Guidelines In The Dental Practice: A Cross-sectional Study(Fakulti Sains Kesihatan and Penerbit UKM, 2023) ;Nurul Haini Najwa Mohamd Mahmod ;Raja Nur Nabiha Raja Amir Hamzah ;Nor Faharina Abdul HamidAzlan JaafarFollowing the COVID-19 outbreak, the World Health Organization issued provisional guidelines to address considerations for essential oral health services in the pandemic situation. Compliance with the guidelines is essential to curb the potential spread of infection within a dental practice. This study aimed to assess the perception of Malaysian dental practitioners towards exercising the provisional COVID-19 dental practice guideline during the early phase of the pandemic. A self-administered questionnaire of a structured type consisting of demographic information and dentist perceptions of the provisional guidelines of dental care during the COVID-19 outbreak was distributed online from May 2021 until August 2021 through various social networking platforms among dental practitioners working at different healthcare sectors in all states in Malaysia. A total of 468 dental practitioners responded to this study. More than three-quarters of the respondents were working in public dental care facilities (76.3%, n=357). The majority of respondents adhered to the provisional guidelines issued during the pandemic outbreak and exhibited a change in standard clinical practice (p<0.001). Dental practitioners working in public sectors perceive that swab tests prior to dental appointments should be mandatory, the reopening of dental clinics increases the risk of spread and the provisional guidelines of COVID-19 in dental practice will be changed in the future compared to private dental practitioners (p<0.001). The majority of dental practitioners in Malaysia have complied with the provisional guidelines imposed by the health bodies. As the COVID-19 virus will persist and become endemic in our communities, it is important to balance the safety issue and patient oral health needs - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

As it is a straightforward procedure, some dentists are not aware of the difficulties that may contribute in reducing the longevity of the filling. The aim of the study is to determine the difficulties encountered during and after placement of restorative materials in deep cavities. Materials and methods: Standardized questionnaires were divided randomly among general private dental practitioners in Kuala Lumpur. Chi-square test was used to determine any significant factors associated with difficulties of material placement. Results: This study showed that the most frequent difficulties encountered among practitioners were to obtain good moisture control (39.0%). No significant association was found between obtaining good moisture control and year of clinical experience (p= 0.286) and also place of graduation with the manipulation of the materials (p= 0.542). Conclusion: Dental practitioners claimed that it was difficult to obtain good moisture control in placement of posterior restoration. Thus, it is an obligation of dental practitioners to practice proper isolation and good manipulation of materials on posterior restoration. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Strenghtening Small Business Among Malay Muslims Through Muamalat And Islamic Syriaat In Malaysia(International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research Publishing, 2018) ;Yaacob Mohd Khatib ;Muhammad Khairi Mahyuddin ;Azlan JaafarNauna Sammariyears of business turbulence, challenges and transformation. Reports of early business trading activities by the Malay community had begun in earlier history of the Sultanate of Malacca. With the coming of the earlier colonialist of Portuguese to Malacca in 1511 and the consequent Dutch and British in the following century had encouraged more Malay ethnics plunged into local trade. However with the discouraging modern day business among present Malay population; a certain determination to find out the failing business trend among younger and the middle age Malay businessmen had prevailed. Modern Malay business establishments involving several criteria of business such as management of SME's, GLC's, restaurants, hotels, workshops, sundries, tourism, constructions and so forth will begin in the study. Problematic business management among Malays is a common issue to date. Business sector is vital for Malay Muslims in particular as it contribute to economic progress of the community. Small business organizations among the Malays are mushrooming every day and at the same times almost 'dying' at the same rate. The issues of weak management without the practice of Islamic ethics and maintaining sustainable business operation are obviously due to lack of material or financial support which finally resulted in ownership transfers to non-citizens or immigrants to this country. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Use of Audio Devices to Increase Preventive Health Behavior during Dental Visits(Universitas Indonesia, 2022) ;Normaliza Ab Malik ;Azlan Jaafar ;Aws Hashim Ali ;Rusyda Helma MohdNor Ba’yah Abdul KadirBackground: Compliance with preventive health behavior is crucial during dental visits. This study investigated using an audio device to increase dental patients’ preventive health behavior. Methods: A randomized control study was conducted in private dental practices. The test group listened to an audio device containing public health messages related to COVID-19 and preventive health behavior.
