Choosing the proper structure of functional sentences in the target language is a crucial aspect of translation. Majnun Layla, a poetic theater by Ahmad Shawqi is considered as one of the outstanding works of contemporary Arabic literature. The work uses various kinds of Arabic functional sentences including prohibition sentences. Prohibition sentences fall within the verbal sentence category in Arabic. This differs with the Malay language, which bases itself on nominal sentences. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the structure of the Arabic prohibition sentences in the poetic theater Majnun Layla and the way these sentences were translated into Malay. Samples of this Malay translation related to prohibition sentences are examined and contrasted. The information of Arabic and Malay sentence structures as well as Vinay and Darbelnet translation procedures are utilised in this analysis. These prohibition sentences are found to be translated into Malay with structures that are suitable for the context and the target language grammar. It is hoped that this study can contribute to improving the accuracy of Arabic–Malay literary translation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication The Arab Spring Online News Coverage: Corpusbased Analysis Of The Tunisian And Egyptian Revolution Keywords(Global Academic Excellence (M) Sdn Bhd (GAE), 2021) ;Muhammad Marwan Bin Ismail ;Farah Nadia Harun ;Wan Moharani Mohammad ;Nurhasma Muhamad SaadZulkipli Bin Md. IsaIn 2011, the Arab world had become the centre of attention once again after the emergence of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ in December 2010. This historical event in the modern history of the Arab region has brought significant social and political reform to the Arab world. The wave of Arab uprising begins in Tunisia at the end of 2010, rapidly separated into other neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Bahrain, and Sudan. Since the early stage of protest, which mainly participated by locals, mass media has comprehensively reported this historical event, which brought down many Arab leaders in power for decades. Thus, Arab Spring has become the headline of many international media outlets, and the media are still discussing the significant impact of the event until now. Hence, the main objective of the study is to examine the event's Arabic online news discourse by focusing on the keywords and prominent social actors in the news reports surrounding the Arab Spring. This will indicate what has been included and excluded or highlighted and marginalised in the news coverage. The data is consist of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) online news published by four prominent news outlets namely with different origin and background: Al-Arabia of Saudi Arabia, Al-Jazeera of Qatar, BBC Arabic of the UK and CNN of the USA. These well-established news outlets were selected for their comprehensive international coverage aims at various Arabic readers worldwide. The study employs corpus linguistics analytical tools by using corpus data mining software ‘AntConc 3.4’. Then, the quantitative results of corpus data will be analysed using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough (1992) and Wodak (2001). The result shows that news coverage of the event has highlighted several keywords that indicate the main social actors and main social events of the Arab Spring. These keywords are the shared command features among the news outlets, although each outlet portraying them is significantly different. Publication Driving Restriction On Saudi Women: A Comperative Analysis Of Modality Between Al-Jazirah And BBC Arabic Reports(USIM Press, 2018) ;Farah Nadia Harun ;Muhammad Marwan Ismail ;Anissa DaoudiPaul ThompsonIn a society mostly dominated by man, Saudi women faced many restrictions compared to man as they have legally been barred from doing manythings by themselves or at least without a male guardian. One of these restrictions is car driving, which was supported by the Islamic pronunciation (fatwa) made by the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia. Over the last twenty years, there are a lot of struggles recorded by the mass media between the group demanding more rights for Saudi women and the conservative preserving the fundamental of Saudi's culture based on strict Islamic teaching. Hence, this paper examines the way modern standard Arabic online news ofAl-Jazirah (AJ) of Saudi Arabia and BBC Arabic (BBCA) of United Kingdom portrayed the restriction of car driving on Saudi women. This paper aims to analyse the ways that language is exploited in BBCA and AJ to report on struggles around the driving restriction on Saudi women, particularly in the used of modality as one of discourse construction strategy utilised by the news outlets. Therefore, the paper will examine the corpus data consists of online news articles published by BBCA and AJ between 2010 and 2014 using corpus data mining software ‘AntConc 3.1’. The quantitative result of corpus data then will be analysed using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough and media discourse of Ruth Wodak.The result shows that the two news outlets have a different way of portraying the restriction of driving on Saudi women according to their political agendas and ideologies. Publication Intertextuality In Online News Coverage Of The 2011 Jasmine Revolution: A Comparison Between Aljazeera And Bbc Arabic(Sciendo, 2022) ;Muhammad Marwan IsmailFarah Nadia HarunIn remembrance of a decade after the so-called 'Arab Spring' (AS), which still attracted a lot of attention among researchers to examine the uprising from various perspectives. Media coverage of the event is one an essential topic among academicians since 2011. Before 2011, Tunisia, the birthplace of the AS was considered a 'quiet' country as it received little international media attention compared to other neighbouring countries, namely Egypt and Morocco. When the uprising emerged in December 2010, Tunisia received intensive media coverage and the country suddenly become the major headline in worldwide international news coverage. Hence, this article aims to critically examine the discursive strategies, particularly the intertextuality utilised by two prominent international Arabic online news outlets: Al-Jazeera and BBC Arabic, in their online coverage of the AS. These two prominent news agencies were chosen for their wide international coverage. Besides, Al-Jazeera of Qatar represents the Arab international media and the 'East', while BBC Arabic which is part of the BBC international news agency based in London, represents the 'West(ern)' media. This article utilises Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with a focus on the three-dimensional textual analysis framework of Fairclough (1992). The textual linguistics analysis is further enhanced with a link to Laclau and Mouffe (1985) Discourse Theory of power struggles for hegemony, which aims to reveal the power struggles between the 'ingroup' (the government) and the 'out-group' (the antagonists) in discourse construction strategies. It is found that certain Tunisian social groups have been strategically included in each outlet's coverage, while other has been intentionally excluded. Thus, this article compares the discourse strategy of intertextuality utilised by Al-Jazeera and BBC Arabic and discloses the hidden ideologies of discourse construction approaches. Publication Laporan Berita Proklamasi Darurat Pandemik Covid-19: Analisis Wacana Autoritatif Portal Berita Bahasa Arab ‘aswaq’(Asian Scholars Network, 2024) ;Muhammad Marwan Ismail ;Farah Nadia Harun ;Wan Moharani Muhamad ;Nurhasma Muhammad SaadZulkipli Md IsaPandemik Covid-19 telah menjadi topik utama wacana segenap lapisan masyarakat. Media masa khususnya portal berita dalam talian telah memainkan peranan yang penting sebagai agen penyebaran maklumat terkait pandemik kepada umum dengan cepat dan mudah. Justeru, makalah ini bertujuan menganalisis dengan terperinci laporan beritaterkait pandemik Covid-19 yang dipaparkan oleh portal berita berbahasa Arab ‘Aswaq’ (aswaqpress.com) bermula Januari hingga Julai 2021. Aswaq yang mula beroperasi sejak 2009 berperanan sebagai jambatan berita dan maklumat antara Malaysia dan dunia Arab. Fokus kajian adalah kepada wacana autoritatif yang memuatkan naratif dari sumber-sumber pihak berwajib dan berpengaruh yang lazimnya dianggap umum sebagai sumber sahih. Kajian ini juga akan merungkai strategi-strategi yang digunakan oleh portal berita Aswaqdalam mengolah dan melaporkan wacana autoritatif dalam laporan berita mereka. Seterusnya ia akan memberi gambaran keseluruhan terhadap naratif lopran berita terkait pandemik Covid-19 yang dihidangkan kepada para pembaca khususnya di Timur Tengah berkaitanMalaysia. Metode kajian adalah kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan Analisis Wacana Kritis (AWK) berasaskan teks (textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis) yang dianjurkan oleh Norman Fairclough (1992). Hasil analisis kualitatif akan dibantu dengan dapatan data statistik janaan perisian analisis Korpus Linguistik ‘AntConc’ bagi sistem Windows 11 versi 4.2.4 (2023). Dapatan awal menunjukkan, naratif berita pandemik Covid-19 oleh Aswaq.com padat dengan wacana autoritatif bagi meyakinkan para pembaca tentang maklumat yang mereka sajikan kepada para pembaca sasaran. Dalam pada itu, terdapat juga wacana dari sumber-sumber lain bersifat antagonis yang mencabar kewibawaan wacana autoritatif selain menawarkan wacana alternatif kepada naratif pihak berkuasa.Semua ini menjadikan wacana portal berita Aswaq kaya dengan pelbagai maklumat dari sumber yang berbeza untuk tatapan para pembaca yang semakin kritis. Publication Modern Standard Arabic Online News Discourse Of Men And Women Corpus-based Analysis(ASIAN SCHOLAR NETWORK, 2021) ;Muhammad Marwan IsmailFarah Nadia HarunArab society treats their women differently compared to men. Arab women, in general, faced restrictions which limit their social participation. In contrast, Arab men dominate most economical, social, and political activities, thus acquiring the highest social hierarchy position. Men also enjoy the freedom of choice and making their own decision, while, women are forced to obey the male members of her family based on the male-guardian system. Over the last two decades, mass media has recorded struggles between the group demanding more rights and freedom for women in the Arab region and the conservative preserving the fundamental of Arab's tribal cultural practices and Islam's teaching. Thus, the present study investigates the representations of m(a/e)n and wom(a/e)n by using Corpus linguistics tools. The study analyses language forms used to represent Arab m(a/e)n and wom(a/e)n in modern standard Arabic online news coverage using AntConc software. The corpus data used in this study consists of 25 news articles each gathered from five different Arabic news institutions namely Elkhabar of Algiers, Addustour of Jordan, Alwatan of Kuwait, Alyaum and Al-Jazirah of Saudi Arabia, published between November 2014 and October 2015. These news outlets represent the diversity of Arab world, as the outlets operate in different Arab countries, carry different political alignment, which findings will come out with different points of view in representing both gender men and women. The quantitative result of corpus data then will be analysed using the qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough and media discourse of Ruth Wodak. The result shows that the news outlets have a different way of portraying Arab women and their men according to their ideologies and political stance. Despite that, the command stereotype of Arab women is still preserved in the news discourses. Thus, at the end of the study, the researchers hope to reveal the outlets' stand on this issue, highlighting the hidden ideologies at the back of the struggles in the construction of Arabic online news discourses around gender issues. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

However, Tunisia was the first country hit by the so-called 'Arab Spring' which toppled many Arabian dictators including Ben Ali of Tunisia. This study aims to critically examine the naming strategies utilized by two prominent Arabic online news outlets: Al-Jazeera and BBC Arabic in their online news of 2011 Jasmine Revolution (JR). These two well-established news agencies were selected for their international wide coverage. In addition, Al-Jazeera which based in Qatar represents the Arab international media and the 'East', while BBC Arabic represents the 'Western' media. The study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) particularly three-dimensional textual analysis framework Fairclough (1992) and Wodak (2001). The linguistics textual analysis will further enhance with a link to Laclau and Muoffe (1985) Discourse Theory of power struggles for hegemony, aims to reveal the power struggles between the 'in-group' (the government) and the 'out-group' (the antagonists) in discourse construction strategies. Hence, this paper examines the way modern standard Arabic online news of Al-Jazirah (AJ) of Saudi Arabia and BBC Arabic (BBCA) of United Kingdom portrayed the challenges faced by Saudi women in their involvement in international sporting events. This paper aims to analyse the ways that language is exploited in BBCA and AJ to report on struggles around the participation of Saudi women in sports, particularly in the used of presupposition strategies as one of discourse construction strategy utilised by the selected news outlets. Therefore, the paper critically examines news articles published by BBCA and AJ between 2010 and 2014 using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough, media discourse of Ruth Wodak and Discourse and ideology of Van Dijk. The preliminary result shows that the two news outlets have a different way of portraying the restriction of Saudi women' participation in international sporting events according to their ideologies. Thus, at the end of the study, the researchers reveal the outlets' stand on this issue. Publication Verbal Processes In The Covid-19 News Discourses: An Analysis Of ‘aswaqpress.com’ Coverage On Malaysia(Penerbit KUIS, 2021) ;Muhammad Marwan Ismail ;Farah Nadia Harun ;Wan Moharani Mohammad ;Nurhasma Muhammad SaadSulaiman IsmailDecember 2019 marked the emergence of a deadly virus known as Covid-19. Since then, we have been battling the virus, which has infected more than 250 million people and killed 4.5 million globally. The pandemic has become the headline of almost every media outlet, local and international news agency. Hence, this article aims to examine the Arabic online news discourse of the event by focusing on the verbal processes strategically utilised in reporting the pandemic in Malaysia. This study's data consists of Modern Standard Arabic online news published by Aswaq (aswaqpress.com) news portal between January and July 2021. Aswaq provides Arabic news and information on Malaysia to the Arab world. Hence, the information provided by the portal is vital in portraying Malaysia to Arab audiences, particularly in framing the way Malaysia deals with the Covid-19. The study employs corpus linguistics analytical tools using corpus software AntConc 3.5.8 (2019). Then, the quantitative result will be analysed using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough (1992). It is shown that Aswaq has strategically utilised various verbal processes to report on the word said and articulated around the pandemic. The diversity of verbal processes usage indicates different connotations that hint at different strategic approaches in reporting the news. Hence, it may lead to uncovering the outlet stance of the event.
