Halim Mohd HussinFarhana SabriApproaching defense mechanisms from the standpoint of drug addiction, it is proposed that defense mechanisms appear along the process of relapse. This study aims to determine the defense mechanism styles of relapsing addicts. A statistical description research design and cluster area sampling method was applied in sample choosing process. 135 respondents were involved in this study, which were randomly chosen from seven centers in East Coast and central zone of Peninsular Malaysia. The findings of the study indicate that neurotic defense mechanisms (M=12.46, S.D=2.14) are the most prominent amongst relapsing addicts, which undoing defense became a major defense style. These findings demonstrate that relapsing addicts employ multiple defense mechanisms styles and all these styles confirm the existence and nature of sub-culture in addiction. The use of defense mechanisms as emotional homeostasis amongst relapsing addicts indicates to incorporate the components of defense mechanisms in relapse prevention counseling. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication How Modernism and Postmodernism Perspectives Can Inform Counseling Practices?(Kuras Institute, 2023)Farhana SabriCounseling practices are informed by traditional approaches – identifying the root of the client’s problems or causes and removing them, thus bringing relief to the client. In psychoanalysis, the causes may be located in the deep recesses of the mind (repression); for the Rogerian they may reside in the client’s discrepancy between ideal-self and real self; while the cognitive counselor will trace the root of the problem to defective thinking. Social constructionism challenges these approaches to counseling practices. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

To date, there is no published article that guides counselors working with Malay Muslim families and couples in Malaysia. Family and couples counseling in Malaysia is done by professional counselors registered with the Malaysian Board of Counselors. The counseling and family therapy models that they learn during their training have been developed by Western researchers and practitioners. To use such models, Malay counselors need to be cautious due to cultural differences between Western and local cultures. The authors have chosen the Multigenerational approach founded by Murray Bowen (1993) to discuss its application for Malay Muslim families and couples. The approach is chosen because of its seeming relevance for Malay Muslim. The authors review basic concepts of Bowens approach, and how it can be applied in understanding Malay Muslim families and couples. A case study is also provided. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
