Publication The Action Of Coleus Aromaticus As A Potential Wound Healing Agent In Experimentally Induced Diabetic Mice(Persatuan Saintis Muslim Malaysia, 2014) ;Kalesware Muniandy ;Zaiton Hassan2Mohd Hafez Mohd IsaThe ethanolic and aqueous extract of Coleus aromaticusleaves and roots wereevaluated for its wound healing activity in diabetic mice inducedexperimentallywith Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) viaexcision and dead space wound modelswith the application of 100 mg kg-1of body weight of extract. Excision wound was createdon five different groups of mice and the wound contractionwas measured for ten uninterrupteddays. Dead space wound model was performed on four different groups of mice for the estimation of the weight of both wet and dry granulation tissue followed by the histological investigation of the wet granulation tissue after ten days. Ethanolic extract treated wounds showed 76.6% of wound area reduction compared to thecontrols that only showed 55.9 % of wound area reduction. The rate of epithelialization in ethanolic extract treated mice was interestingly higher compared to the controls. Histological investigation shows an increase in granulation tissue, good proliferation of collagen tissue and satisfactory angiogenesis in the leaves and root extract treated mice compared to the controls. Coleus aromaticusstimulates significant wound healing in experimentally induced diabetic mice and evaluation of the effectiveness ofColeus aromaticus as wound healingagenton humanorganismis highly suggested. Publication A Qualitative Study to Explore the Current Practices to Curb Obesity among Secondary School Students in Malaysia(International Journal for Research Trends and Innovation, 2023) ;Kalesware Muniandy ;Hayati Binti IsmailSaiful Izwan Bin ZainalMalaysia has the highest number of obesity cases in South-East Asia. The National Health and Morbidity Survey which was carried out in 2019 shows a startling statistic, in which 50.1% of Malaysians were either overweight or obese. The systematic review from the year of 1990 to 2014 shows an increasing prevalence of obesity among Malaysian secondary school students. This indicates that obesity or overweight develops gradually from childhood, in which an obese child could develop into an obese adult. The demand to develop and execute various practices to reduce obesity among secondary school students grows as the number of obesity cases continues to rise. Hence, this qualitative study of semi-structured interviews is undertaken to examine the current practices available in Malaysia to curb obesity among Malaysian secondary students. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication A Semi-structured Interview To Study The Factors Contributing To Obesity Among Malaysian Secondary Students(JPPW, 2023) ;Kalesware Muniandy ;Noor Hayati IsmailSaiful Izwan Bin ZainalThe prevalence of obesity among Malaysian secondary school students is increasing gradually. NHMS 2019 reveals that 29.8% children of the age five to 17 years have excess body weight. Prolonged energy imbalancewhich is caused by high calorie diet consumption and physical inactiveness, could lead to excess body weight. Despite several measuresand initiatives, the prevalence of obesity among Malaysian secondary students is hiking up, presumably due to some reasons. Hence, this qualitative study is carried out to investigate the factors contributing toobesity among Malaysian secondary students. A semi-structured interview was conducted incorporating the students, parents, teachers and health officials, after obtaining a written consent. The study shows factors such as environment, existing health condition, dietary pattern and sedentary lifestyle could contribute to obesity.
