Publication The Islamic communication paradigm: Challenges and future directions(American Scientific Publishers, 2017) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Yusoff S.H. ;Kanaker O. ;Abdullah R. ;Islamic Science Institute ;Faculty of Leadership and ManagementUniversiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Islamic communication models suggested by communication scholars such as Hamid Mowlana and Muhammad Ayish have opened the way for some significant and highly needed comparative analysis. Their conceptions, however, have been criticised for generalisation and a disregard for the complexity of the communication process, as well as the context of the global community. This article argues that, although the Islamic communication paradigm offers a much needed alternative perspective on communication study, which centres on the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge, it should not exist in isolation from other so-called Western communication theories. This paper suggest that, in an effort to enrich the Islamic communication paradigm, three issues need to be debated and discussed: the need to go beyond de-Westernisation, to avoid the pitfalls of cultural essentialism and the importance to establish dialogical-dialectical awareness of the current communication theories and models. 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Muammad's Conversations with the Bedouin: A Speech-Act Analysis of Prophetic Discourse in Hadith(Brill Academic Publishers, 2019) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Yusoff S.H. ;Kanaker O. ;Faculty of Leadership and ManagementUniversiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Speech-act theory allows us to study how words have an impact in real life and the performative nature of words. At the same time, it can also contribute to an understanding of communication style and communication strategy. In this article, speechact theory is applied to the conversations of Prophet Muammad with the Bedouin in two ways. First, the speech acts of the Prophet are analyzed using the categories put forward by John Searle to see how they function within the conversation. Second, the illocutionary force of an utterance and its perlocutionary effect - based on words and expressions that the Prophet used in his utterances - are examined to discover patterns in his communication strategy towards the Bedouin. koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2019. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication The nation-state factor in global news reporting: A study of the BBC World News and Al Jazeera English coverage(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2014) ;Kasmani M.F.Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)This article aims to understand to what extent the nation-state context explained the coverage of the BBC World News and Al Jazeera English during the 2009 Iranian election. It mainly examines how the leaders of the Iranian political factions, namely, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mir Hossein Mousavi were represented by the BBC World News and Al Jazeera English. This study triangulates textual analysis of the BBC World News and Al Jazeera English news, with the results of interviews with BBC World News reporters and editors who were involved in the coverage of the election. The analysis found that there were differences in the portrayal of the BBC World News and Al Jazeera English. It concludes that Al Jazeera Englishs all-Iranian correspondents have a closer dependence on their country of origin than their host nation-state, while the national affiliation appeared to significantly explain the reporting of the BBC World News. The Author(s) 2014. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Objective reporting or mouthpiece for the opposition groups?: A study of malaysiakini coverage of the 2013 malaysian general election [Pemberitaan objektif atau lidah rasmi kumpulan pembangkang?: Satu kajian liputan pilihanraya umum Malaysia 2013](Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Press, 2016) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Strategic Communication Centre (StraComm)Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)MalaysiaKini is regarded by political communication scholars as an influential online news medium in Asia. Within the restricted environment of Malaysian media, MalaysiaKini is able to provide critical reports of the ruling authorities and gives voice to the marginalised opinions of the opposition groups. MalaysiaKini is often praised for its high standards of journalistic practice based on the norms and values of independent journalism. Some however argue that as the platform for marginalised voices, the news portal is also, by default, seen as pro-opposition and acts as an opposition mouthpiece in Malaysia. This article examines the coverage of the news portal, and the 2013 Malaysian General Election will be used as a case study. Drawing on one of the important concepts in modern journalistic practice, namely objectivity, this study attempts to explain the extent to which MalaysiaKini fairly represents each leading side in the political controversy and in the impartial reporting of news. Through qualitative analysis, this study found that MalaysiaKini largely upholds the voice of the opposition parties. The study concludes that rather than offering objective reporting, MalaysiaKini contributes to an environment of a multiplicity of ideas and plurality of news coverage in Malaysia. 2016, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Press. Publication Prophetic approaches in communication: A pilot analysis of hadith prophet muhammad(American Scientific Publishers, 2017) ;Jamilin A.K. ;Kasmani M.F. ;Hashim N. ;Ghazali N.M. ;Muhamad N.A.F. ;Jaafar N. ;Islamic Science InstituteUniversiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Prophet Muhammad’s strategies in calling to Islam have always been referred to as exemplary in many writings on the principles of Da’wah communication. These studies however only touch on the surface of the communication skills of the prophet. This article attempts to present an in-depth analysis of Prophet Muhammad’s verbal and non-verbal communication strategies in disseminating the message of the Quran. A hadith taken from the collection of Sahih Muslim, explaining the Hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam, is chosen for analysis. A detailed reading of the Hadith is carried out. The saying is analysed textually and triangulated with the contextual analysis of the hadith based on other narrations, the Quranic verses, Islamic history and Asbab al-Wurud or reasons for stating hadiths. Findings show that although Prophet Muhammad’s non-verbal communication of silence shows an uneasy expression of feeling and an indication that the conversation between him and his addressee is not going smoothly, the if-clauses is predominantly used by him, which hints at the possibility of politeness, avoiding rudeness and avoiding coercion. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Representation of international views on the 2009 Iranian election: A study of BBC world news and Al Jazeera English(Taylor's University Lakeside Campus, 2014) ;Kasmani M.F.Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)This paper provides a comparative analysis on the news reporting style of BBC World News (BBCWN) and Al Jazeera English (AJE). BBCWN was selected to represent the mainstream Western group of global media traffic, and AJE was selected to represent the contra-flow group of global news media. The global event of the 2009 Iranian presidential election was chosen as a case study. The conceptual framework of this study was based on the global media thesis of flow and counter-flow in 24-hour news channels. The central question of the thesis investigates how international views were reflected in the BBCWN and AJE coverage. The news reporting of the 2009 presidential election by both networks were subjected to the qualitative method of discourse analysis. The study found that the BBCWN's coverage represented more voices from the US and the UK and tended to highlight the tension between Iran and the West more. In contrast, AJE's coverage tended to play down the Iran vs the West confrontation. The network sometimes took a more anti-Western stance by highlighting the view from Russia that suggests the role of Western powers in orchestrating the postelection protests. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication A transgressive voice in a restrictive media environment: A study of sinar harian coverage of the 2013 Malaysian general election(Taylor's University Lakeside Campus, 2016) ;Kasmani M.F.Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Malaysian newspapers have a responsibility to be catalysts for national development. For that reason, newspapers in Malaysia are expected to not challenge the state and to partner the state toward nation-building. Although mainstream media in Malaysia are restricted by the state, this does not completely exclude more transgressive modes pushed by challengers. One of the newspapers that could be regarded as breaking the norm in its coverage with other mainstream newspapers in Malaysia is Sinar Harian. This research will study the kinds of transgressive forms of contention that tend to surface through the reporting of the newspaper. The reporting by Sinar Harian during the 2013 Malaysian General Election is subject to qualitative discourse analysis. The result shows that not only did Sinar Harian give space to the opposition group to challenge the authorities, but the newspaper also, at times, challenged the status quo by placing the ruling coalition Barisan National and opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat on an equal footing. The Author(s) 2016. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Who is tweeting on #PRU13?(Canadian Center of Science and Education, 2014) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Sabran R. ;Ramle N.A.Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)The popular microblogging platform known as Twitter has become a legitimate and frequently used communication channel in the Malaysian political arena. While the 2008 Malaysian general election was notable for the use of social media by the opposition parties during their campaigns, the 2013 general election saw a level playing field in which the Barisan Nasional coalition had quickly caught up in its use of social media. This study draws on a content analysis of election-related Twitter messages collected under the #pru13 hashtag to describe the key patterns of activity and the thematic foci of the election's coverage on this particular social media site. The dataset is collected from Twitter's public timeline from May 1to May 6, 2013. What emerged from this analysis is there are evidently intensified and amplified campaign messages polluting the #pru13 hastag from accounts that are questionable in their origin. This study adds to the literature that has questioned the predictive power of social media in an election.
