Publication The Elements Of News Construction Model In Malaysia(Univeresiti Malaya, 2014) ;Siti Suriani Othman ;Liana Mat NayanLee Kuok TiungWhat becomes news in one country is different from another, and this is connected with the fact that news construction is a complex process. When discussing the complexity of news construction, one of the most important criteria that should not be neglected is the specificity of news construction in a certain country and/or culture. As such, the news construction model in Malaysia is one of the examples of a complex and specific process, as Malaysia is an Islamic country home to a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. Thus, this paper will discuss two concepts that are suggested as the foundations of the news construction model in Malaysia. They include the principles of Islam and its connection to journalism practice, and multiculturalism. In discussing this, the paper argues that, these concepts are unable to demonstrate complexity and specificity of news construction in Malaysia, but they enable further the focus on the specificity of Malaysian news to be explored and extended by future studies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Hubungan Pembaca dan Berita dalam Akhbar Malaysia: Satu Analisis dari Perspektif Editor(Universiti Malaya, 2015) ;Siti Suriani Binti Othman ;Liana Mat NayanLee Kuok TiungThe concept of news selection is closely related to news value and internal organizational factors (such as editorial authority, newsroom socialization) and external factors (such as political, economic and ideological factors), as well as news consumers. The news consumer is a highly important element in determining what news to report. The relationship between the news consumer and the newspaper is still vague, and under-studied. This study examines the relationship between readers and published news. Editors and reporters from five Malaysian local newspapers were interviewed to gain insight into the link between news consumers and published news. This study found three types of relationships wherein (1) News Trails News Consumers (i.e. news is influenced by the audience), (2) Reciprocity between News and News Consumers (i.e. mutually-influencing relationship between news and the audience), and (3) News Consumers Train the News. All three give rise to a scenario in which news readers collectively belong to what Benedict Anderson calls an 'imagined community'. This idea of an imagined community of news audiences is discussed in the closing of this article. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Pemilihan Berita Dari Perspektif Wartawan Media Cetak di Malaysia(Penerbit UKM, 2013) ;Siti Suriani Othman ;Liana Mat NayanLee Kuok TiungPelbagai peristiwa berlaku setiap hari. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Wanita dalam Dunia Kewartawanan Profesion, Prospek dan Masa Depan dalam Industri Persuratkhabaran di Sabah(Department of Media and Communication Studies, 2012) ;Lee Kuok Tiung ;Siti Suriani OthmanLiana Mat NayanThe emergence of female journalists in Sabah’s local newspapers has broken the hegemony and domination of men in the profession of journalism. However, those female journalists are still facing stereotypical perceptions towards women, particularly on the issue of gender discrimination, exploitation of women and many other feminist issues. This preliminary study was carried out to identify the reasons these women chose to become journalists and to determine the issues and challenges faced by female journalists in the newspaper industry. The findings, gathered through in-depth interviews with 12 female journalists from six newspaper companies, have identified the key factors motivating them to choose journalism to be the flexible working hours; the attractive salaries and bonus payments; and the nature of the role of a journalist, which requires lots of travel, offers good prospects to develop their careers, and also gives them the opportunities to further their studies. In terms of their job responsibilities, the news topics assigned to the female journalists covered various issues, such as society, socio-economic development, and politics affairs. Organization size was found to have an obvious influence on the tasks of female journalists compared to male. Generally, there is not much difference between female journalists and male journalists that can be highlighted as they enjoy equal treatments and benefits. Indeed in certain aspects, female journalists have advantages compare to their male colleagues. This finding also rejects the idea that there is if discrimination against or marginalization of women in journalism.
