RahmanMohd Hafiz JaafarCOVID-19 pandemic results in unprecendeted impacts globally. New discoveries and knowledge on this pandemic is evolving. A study was conducted to determine factors that are associated with knowledge, attitude and practice among medical students at one of the public universities in Malaysia towards COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted through online surveys by using a set of questionnare. The questionnaire was adapted and adopted from validated sources. It was found that, the scores for knowledge, practice and attitude were high among medical students. Male students had higher level of knowledge whereas females had significantly higher level of attitude and practice. Level of knowledge differed between years of study. Clinical year students had higher level of knowledge and practice compared to pre-clinical year students. Findings from this study might prove as the baseline for planning awareness campaigns for students for better containment of COVID-19 and its further spread - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Despite positive evidence on the benefit of family planning, its utilisation among Malaysian population is still lower than expected. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of family planning utilisation and its associated factors among adults in Malaysia. Methods: An online survey was conducted involving 402 respondents of Malaysian adults. Convenience sampling was used in recruiting the respondents. Pretested questionnaire was distributed using online google form through various social media platform. Family planning utilisation was defined as the usage of any contraceptive methods (modern or traditional) within the past one year. The independent variables studied were sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge and attitude towards family planning, presence of spousal communication for family planning and accessibility to the service. Results: Prevalence of FP utilisation was 49.0% with higher percentages noted among female, Malay, age between 24-35 years, married, completed tertiary education, middle income group (M40) and having one to five children. Mean (SD) scores of knowledge (9.01 (2.271) and attitude (42.20 (4.948) towards FP were higher among respondents who utilised FP. The accessibility rate for FP services was 69.9%. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that predictors for FP utilisation were, high scores of knowledge (P=0.001) and attitude (P=0.026) towards FP, age group of 25-34 (P=0.001) together with 35-50 years old (P=0.001) and having 1 to 5 children in the family (P=0.011). Conclusion: Family planning utilisation remains low despite easily accessible services. Increasing knowledge, instils positive attitude and targeting towards suitable population are among the crucial elements to be focused in any intervention plans by the relevant authorities - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

The implementation of a nationwide lockdown as a measure to control the spread of disease has resulted in economic instability, which has had a significant impact on the livelihood of the general population, particularly vulnerable groups such as transgender women or trans women. The primary objective of this study was to explore the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemicon Malay transgender women within the context of the lockdown measures implemented in Malaysia. This study employed in-depth interviews, using a semi-structured interview protocol, to gather data from a sample of eleven localMalay trans women residing in southern Malaysia. By identifying and describing emergent patterns across data through the search for implicit and explicit themes pertinent to the study's objectives, thematic analysis was utilised. This study identified seven prominent themes: (1) job struggle and loss of income; (2)forced to use saving to survive; (3) food insecurity due to severe financial constraint; (4) impact on accommodation; (5) financial burden to support others; (6) reliance on aid and (7) reluctance in getting financial aid due to presumed stigma and discrimination. This study provides evidence that the implementation of lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic had a significantimpact on the economic well-being of Malay transgender women in Malaysia. Further research is needed to explore the post-pandemic status of individuals, with a special focus on their health and psychosocial well-being. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Equity In Out-of-pocket Payments For Healthcare Services: Evidence From Malaysia(MDPI, 2022) ;Mohamed Fakhri Abu Baharin ;Muhamad Hanafiah JuniRosliza Abdul ManafBackground: Out-of-pocket (OOP) payments are an inequitable mechanism for health financing as their high share of total health expenditures poses a risk of catastrophic healthcare expenditures. This study aimed to assess the distribution and progressivity of OOP payments made by Malaysian households for various group of healthcare services. Methods: This study utilized data from the Malaysian Household Expenditure Survey (HES) between 2014 and 2015, which involved 14,473 households. Distribution and progressivity of OOP payments were measured through their proportion of household consumption, a concentration curves plot and the Kakwani Progressivity Index (KPI). Results: The mean proportion of Malaysian OOP payments for healthcare of household consumption was 1.65%. The proportion increased across households’ consumption quintiles, from 1.03% made by the poorest 20% to 1.86% by the richest 20%. The OOP payments in Malaysia were progressive with a positive KPI of 0.0910. The OOP payments made for hospital-based services were the most progressive (KPI 0.1756), followed by medical products, appliances and equipment (KPI 0.1192), pharmaceuticals (0.0925) and outpatient-based services (KPI 0.0394) as the least progressive. Conclusions: Overall, the OOP payments for healthcare services in Malaysia were progressive and equitable as they were more concentrated among the richer households. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication We Find Strength in Each Other: The Psychosocial Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Malay Trans Women in Malaysia(USIM Press, 2023) ;Fathima Begum Syed Mohideen ;Nizam Baharom ;Mohamed Fakhri Abu Baharin ;Khadijah Hasanah Abang Abdullah ;Rafidah Hanim MokhtarZainora DaudThe lockdowns or ‘movement control order’ especially during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted all walks of life in Malaysia, including the transgender community. This study aimed to explore the psychosocial impact of lockdown regulation during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic on Malay trans women or Mak Nyah in a southern state in Malaysia. This is a qualitative study with semi-structured, in-depth interviews and thematic analysis. 11 local Malay trans women aged 33 to 50, participated using purposive snowball sampling, starting with a local outreach worker. Six salient, interrelated themes were identified, namely: (1) Fear of the pandemic; (2) The psychological impact of lockdown; (3) The social impact of lockdown; (4) Family as a main concern during lockdown; (5) Transgender community as a source of support; and (6) Concerns about own health. Although the lockdown had considerable psychosocial impact, the close relationship among the local trans women community has alleviated some of the hardship. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown imposed psychosocial challenges impacting Malay trans women in a southern state in Malaysia. Being in a local transgender network provided invaluable moral support, relieved loneliness and offered some solutions for financial burden during the lockdown.
