Publication The Effects of Online Learning Attitude and Engagement on MFL Learners’ Performance during COVID-19 Pandemic(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2022) ;Suo Yan ju ;Suo Yan MeiHazlina AbdullahThe COVID-19 outbreak has significantly affected various activities worldwide, including education, leading to a major crisis of transferring all institutions to online learning via various educational platforms. When this happens, countless issues have arisen as everybody is adapting to the transitional phase of the traditional classroom to online teaching and learning. In Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) all students are expected to use the online platform offered by the institution such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom to continue their studies. The purpose of this research is to assess students' early experiences with these new platforms. It also investigates the relationship between students' engagement and attitudes of remote learning and their course performance, especially in foreign language learning. Students' attitudes towards Mandarin as a foreign language by using e-learning, engagement with platforms, and performance with online courses are analyzed quantitatively using the statistical program for the social sciences (SPSS). Although the findings indicate that distance learning is still in its early stages, most students' positive attitudes and willingness to participate in distance learning classes in the post-COVID19 pandemic indicate that e-learning platforms in higher education institutions have a bright future. Some guidelines to inspire foreign language learners to engage in and enjoy learning foreign languages online are by preparing a course with comprehensible texts, audio-visual resources, and a proper level of difficulties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Engagement Among Malaysian Public University Learners Of Mandarin As A Foreign Language: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Engagement Scale(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2023) ;Suo Yan ju ;Muhammad YusufSuo Yan MeiWhen imagining the ideal classroom, most teachers strive for engagement. To know if learners are engaged in their learning, teachers need to know if the learners get on with their tasks, be attentive in class, complete their assignments and actively participate in class activities. In contrast, learners feel relaxed and energetic and enjoy learning. Numerous theoretical models of engagement suggest that it is important in education and second languages but has limited adoption in foreign language learning, especially Mandarin as a foreign language. This study aims to analyse the psychometric properties of the Mandarin Foreign Language Engagement scale. A random sample of 614 individuals from selected public universities in Malaysia was used for the study. The 14 items of the Mandarin Foreign Language Engagement Scale (MFLES) factor structure was adopted from previous studies and analysed using confirmatory factor analysis. The study found that the MFLES has good psychometric properties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Predictors of Online Learning Readiness and Their Consequences on Learning Engagement and Perceived Teaching Quality during Covid19(Sciedu Press, 2022) ;Mikail Ibrahim ;Saleh Hamood Nasser AL-Sinawi ;Suo Yan juMohammed Borhandden MusahThis empirical study attempts to investigate the causal relationships between the predictors of online learning readiness and its effects on learning engagement and perceived teaching quality. In other words, the study aims to explore the direct relationship between goal orientation and perceived teaching quality, on the one hand, and the students’ learning engagement and perceived teaching quality and their indirect relationships via online learning readiness. A total of 703 students from Malaysian and Omani higher institutions voluntarily participated in this study following the quota sampling technique. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data gathered. The results of the analysis suggested that the goal orientation and perceived self-efficacy were statistically and directly related to learning engagement and perceived teaching quality and indirectly via online learning readiness. Furthermore, the analysis showed that goal orientation has a direct positive and significant relationship with learning engagement and perceived teaching quality and positive indirect relationships with them via online learning readiness. However, while perceived self-efficacy had a direct positive correlation with learning engagement, it had a negative and direct relation with perceived teaching quality but a positive indirect relationship via online learning readiness. Hence, due to the ongoing covid19 global pandemic, this study implicates that highlighting the roles of goal and efficacy in an online context is essential because they would affect students’ learning engagement and their evaluation of teaching quality. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Teaching English for Academic Purposes Through Project-Based Learning Method and Process Writing Approach(USIM Press, 2022) ;Hazlina Abdullah ;Haliza Harun ;Nursyuhada’ Ab Wahab ;Suo Yan juMyra Aidrin Mohd AliEnglish for Academic Purposes (EAP) has gained more prominence in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) since its initiation in the 1980s. In Malaysia, a country where English is its second language, EAP is widely taught in many tertiary institutions. This is due to its main aim which is to focus on the communicative skills needed for academic purposes in formal educational settings to accomplish academic tasks such as delivering presentations, participating in academic discussions as well as writing academic and research essays. At USIM, EAP BIA3012 is a compulsory course introduced with the aim to develop students’ English proficiency and provide students with appropriate skills demanded in completing academic tasks at the tertiary level. The EAP course conducted at USIM employs the project-based learning (PBL) method, coupled with the process writing approach. This paper describes the application of both approaches in the implementation of EAP. The research project assigned to students will be explicated through its anatomy or structure according to PBL. Additionally, process writing, an approach to teaching writing that allows the students to undergo a journey of co-constructing texts under the guidance of the teachers, will also be clearly explained. In particular, this paper will outline the complicated and non-linear nature of writing shown through these elements—generating ideas, focusing, reviewing, evaluating, structuring, drafting—which are taught and completed through a project assigned to students. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication معيارا التماسك والانسجام لدى دي بوجراند و دريسلر ولدى المفسرين والبلاغين العرب القدامى: مقاربة في العلم النقلي والعقلي(Persatuan Bekas Mahasiswa Islam Timur Tengah, 2017) ;Ayad Abdullah, ;Zena Alobaidi, ;Yuslina Mohamed, ;Suo Yan juWan Moharani MohammadAfter De Saussure, the concept of text began to develop by Harris (1952), Chomsky (1957), Van Dyke (1972) and then as a theory by DeBojerand and Dressler (1981) Introduction to Text Linguistics. Seven text criteria were developed; perhaps the foremost criterions of coherence and cohesion. Arab linguists stated that the former Arab scholars were limited to sentences and did not go beyond it, the text was anonymous. As if they were devoid of the text idea. Therefore, this paper examines the extent of text knowledge and its standards by Arab scholars. Through descriptive approach; the findings demonstrated that the interpreters and rhetoricians ancients, were not limited to sentences. Their research did not stop at sentence edge; when they adopted the text as one integrated piece, practiced all text's standards sporadically but not combined together, particularly coherence and cohesion standards. This emphasize the significant of USIM's integration of Naqli and Aqli.
