Publication Qur’anic Contents in the Secondary School Curriculum of Bangladesh: A Critical Appraisal of the Selected Textbooks(Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2023-11) ;Muhammad ShahidullahTazul Islam [Supervisor]This research aims at reviewing the Qur’anic contents in the secondary school curriculum of Bangladesh, entitled “Islam and Moral Education (IME)”. It includes the current textbooks for grades six to ten. However, the current research addresses mainly how these selected textbooks dealt with Qur’anic verses. It is generally observed that some of the cited Qur’anic verses are not relevant to the topics. Moreover, some topics in the textbooks are not referred to in any Qur’anic verses. In addition, the translation of the cited verses was also examined in this study. Hence, the researcher explores the relevant, less relevant, and irrelevant verses in these textbooks. Furthermore, the study attempts to incorporate the Qur’anic verses into verse-free topics and analyze the translation of the verses therein. This study adopts a qualitative method. Data were collected from the selected textbooks through coding relevant, less-relevant, irrelevant, verse-free topics, and weakness in translating the verses. These variables were validated by a focus group discussion (FGD). Besides, the validation of FGD has been certified by an opinion polling group (OPG) developed by the textbooks’ subject educators. The study found that in the IME textbooks of classes six to ten, two hundred ninety-three out of three hundred thirty-nine verses are relevant to the topics and content. Nevertheless, in all textbooks, twenty-seven Qur’anic verses were found as less relevant, and nineteen verses were found as irrelevant. Moreover, eighty-two verses were found appropriate for quoting under verse-free topics. In other words, these verses are available to support those topics. Finally, the translation of the given verses neither refers to any famous translation nor maintains the standard. The researcher hopes that the findings of the research will support a review of the content of these textbooks based on the Qur’anic perspective. Furthermore, it can provide valuable and effective materials for textbook authors, curriculum developers, and syllabus designers to boost precise religious teachings in the secondary education of Bangladesh. Recommendations are made for improving the religious textbooks, namely the Qur’anic curriculum, which can be reconstructed as per the outcomes of this study.
