Publication The Islamic communication paradigm: Challenges and future directions(American Scientific Publishers, 2017) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Yusoff S.H. ;Kanaker O. ;Abdullah R. ;Islamic Science Institute ;Faculty of Leadership and ManagementUniversiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Islamic communication models suggested by communication scholars such as Hamid Mowlana and Muhammad Ayish have opened the way for some significant and highly needed comparative analysis. Their conceptions, however, have been criticised for generalisation and a disregard for the complexity of the communication process, as well as the context of the global community. This article argues that, although the Islamic communication paradigm offers a much needed alternative perspective on communication study, which centres on the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge, it should not exist in isolation from other so-called Western communication theories. This paper suggest that, in an effort to enrich the Islamic communication paradigm, three issues need to be debated and discussed: the need to go beyond de-Westernisation, to avoid the pitfalls of cultural essentialism and the importance to establish dialogical-dialectical awareness of the current communication theories and models. 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Muammad's Conversations with the Bedouin: A Speech-Act Analysis of Prophetic Discourse in Hadith(Brill Academic Publishers, 2019) ;Kasmani M.F. ;Yusoff S.H. ;Kanaker O. ;Faculty of Leadership and ManagementUniversiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)Speech-act theory allows us to study how words have an impact in real life and the performative nature of words. At the same time, it can also contribute to an understanding of communication style and communication strategy. In this article, speechact theory is applied to the conversations of Prophet Muammad with the Bedouin in two ways. First, the speech acts of the Prophet are analyzed using the categories put forward by John Searle to see how they function within the conversation. Second, the illocutionary force of an utterance and its perlocutionary effect - based on words and expressions that the Prophet used in his utterances - are examined to discover patterns in his communication strategy towards the Bedouin. koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2019.
