Publication Anti-Bacterial Activities of Melastoma Malabathricum Stem Bark Fractions against Streptococcus Mutans(Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2018) ;Rohazila Mohamad Hanafiah ;Siti Aisyah Abd Ghafar ;Zurairah Ibrahim ;Wan Yaacob Wan Ahmad ;Wan Syaidatul AqmaNazlina IbrahimThe objective of this study is to isolate and identify the bioactive compounds that possess antibacterial activities from Melastoma malabathricum stem bark acetone extract (MMSBAE) against Streptococcus mutans. M. malabathricum is widely used in the Southeast Asia to treat many ailments. A total of 12 fractions was purified by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and further analysed by TLC-bioautography to determine antibacterial activities. TLC-bioautography showed that fraction 9 possesses antibacterial activities against S. mutans. Identification of fraction 9 had been done by GCMS and revealed 21 compounds. Some of the compound were important as agent pharmaceutical such as α-amyrin, β-sitosterol, hexadecenoic acid, stearic acid and hexacosanoic acid. Crystal violet and glass surface assay were used to determine anti-biofilm and anti-adherence activity, respectively. The concentrations of fraction 9 that produce 50% reduction in anti-biofilm and anti-adherence activities were 5 mg/mL and 2.50 mg/mL, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to visualize the effect of the fraction 9 on biofilm structure of S. mutans. SEM analysis showed lysed biofilm were found on treated cells. These results indicated that this fraction possesses a powerful anti-cariogenic potential against S. mutans. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Awareness of fake braces usage among Y- Generations(University of Dicle, 2019) ;Rohaya Megat Abdul Wahab ;Siti Khadijah Hasan ;Nor Ermamarsila Mohd Yamin ;Zurairah Ibrahim ;Faculty of Dentistry ;Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)A study to investigate the level of fake braces awareness among Y-generations involving 170 students age between 19-25 years old from a government University. A questionnaire was created and validated prior assessment on the students' knowledge on dental health treatment, orthodontic treatment and fake braces. The respondents were females (88%) and 12% were males in the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Most of the respondents (99%) concerned about their dental health and knew all dental treatments. Only 71% seek treatment when they have dental problems, 95% of the respondents knew fixed braces treatment but 48% thought the treatment should be provided by an orthodontist. Sixty-one percent of the respondents knew the fake braces from the internet (66%), reading (29%) or while visiting dental clinics (3%). Most of the respondents taught fake braces were cheaper and advanced in style. Only 35% of the respondents aware about the dangerous side effect of fake braces. The students have awareness on dental health and dental treatments provided in Malaysia, but minority are aware of the side effects of wearing fake braces. 2019 Journal of International Dental and Medical Research. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication A Comparative Study Of Dental Indices Among Dental Students(Ectordermal Dysplasia Group, 2020) ;Wan Hamidah Najwa Wan Shuhaimi ;Siti Aishah Mohd Khairun Anuar ;Syiral Mastura Abdullah ;Aspalilah Alias ;Zurairah Ibrahim ;Alizae Marny Fadzlin Syed MohamadRohaya Megat Abdul WahabMalocclusion is an appreciable deviation from ideal occlusion that may be considered as aesthetically or functionally unsatisfactory. Treatment need indices are used to determine the need prior to orthodontic treatment. Index of Treatment Need (IOTN) and Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) are the most common indices used to determine the severity of malocclusion and treatment need. The aims of this study are to evaluate students’ diagnostic ability in determining orthodontic treatment need using IOTN and DAI, and to determine students’ perception to both indices. This study was carried out on 49 clinical dental students of the Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM). They attended a seminar and practical sessions on the IOTN and DAI indices given by orthodontist. All students were asked to score 20 study models using both indices. At the end of assessment, students were asked to answer questionnaires regarding their perceptions towards both indices. The data was analysed using paired t-test, kappa statistic and descriptive analysis. USIM clinical dental students were able to determine the severity of malocclusion using IOTN significantly better (p< 0.05) than DAI. The inter-rater reliability assessment resulted in interclass correlation coefficient of 0.62 for the IOTN and 0.61 for DAI. Questionnaires revealed that students prefer to use IOTN more than DAI in determining severity of malocclusion. Clinical dental students showed better understanding in diagnostic assessment using IOTN than DAI in determining severity of malocclusion. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Dental Education: Experience Sharing from a Malaysian Public University(USIM Press, 2021-04) ;Faizah Abdul Fatah, ;Nor Azura Ahmad Tarmidzi, ;Nor Haliza Mat-Baharin, ;Diana Zahid ;Rohazila Mohamad Hanafiah, ;Nusima Mohamed ;Wan Nor Syariza Wan AliZurairah IbrahimCoronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute infectious disease that causes global outbreaks. The COVID-19 outbreak has forced various sectors to change their approach and daily practice to new alternatives. Dental education is no exception to the effects of this pandemic, which has severely disrupted teaching, learning and clinical activities. The impact of this pandemic on dental education can be classified into different aspects, including academic, practical, research and clinical services. Teaching and learning activities have been transformed into distance learning methods. However, dental educators are still struggling with psychomotor components, including practical and clinical sessions, which are the main course components that are severely affected. This sharing of experience focuses on the effects of the pandemic on the delivery of dental education and the actions taken by the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) to ensure continuous learning. The challenges faced by the faculty are overcome with careful planning and discussion through the establishment of specific committees related to various issues, such as online learning and clinical COVID-19 committees. The committees identify any issues, plan the strategies and monitor the implementation of the plan. All actions during the pandemic are closely monitored by managing the faculty and university to ensure implementation of organised and smooth work, good record keeping, and compliance with instructions and guidelines by the authority. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication A Randomized Controlled Trial On The Efficacy Of Two Types Of Manual Toothbrushes In Patients With Fixed Appliances(Ectodermal Dysplasia Group-Turkey, 2019) ;Zurairah Ibrahim ;Syiral Mastura Abdullah ;Azrul Hafiz Abdul Aziz ;Ainuddin Yushar Yusof ;Diana Binti Md ZahidRohaya Megat Abdul WahabThis research is a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of plaque removal between manual conventional and orthodontic toothbrushes in patients having fixed orthodontic treatment using Orthodontic Plaque Index (OPI). This study was conducted by two orthodontists at USIM Specialist Dental Clinic with almost perfect agreement level (Kappa score: 0.95). A total of 58 orthodontic patients were divided into 2 groups; first group were patients given manual conventional toothbrush (CTB) and the other were given orthodontic toothbrush (OTB). Consent obtained, and participants were instructed to follow standardized specific oral hygiene care regimes. Orthodontic Plaque Index (OPI) was then recorded during baseline(V0), 1 month (V1), 2 months (V2), and 3 months (V3) reviews for all participants. Out of 58 patients, only 26 participants (5 male and 21 female) completed the 3 review visits. Median values were used as data was not normally distributed. At baseline, both OTB and CTB group median values were 2.00±1.00. At first month review, V1 the median values for both groups maintained at 2.00±0.00. The same values maintained at second month review, V2 where OTB was 2.00±0.00 and CTB was 2.00±1.00. During last review visit, V3 the median values for OTB was 2.00±1.00 and CTB was 2.00±0.00. Overall mean values were 1.94 (SD=0.42) for the OTB group and 2.02 (SD=0.49) for CTB group. The mean’s significant differences of OPI score between two groups was compared using Mann Whitney's U test and the resulted p value was found to be insignificant (p>0.05) where p-value for OTB is 0.42 and p= 0.65 for CTB group. These results suggested that there were no significant differences in plaque removal ability between OTB and CTB in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Short Dental Implants On Rehabilitation Of Atrophic Maxillary Ridge Utilizing Digital Planning(USIM Press, 2021) ;Muhammad Syafiq Alauddin ;Zurairah IbrahimAhmad Dzulfikar SamsudinThis is a clinical case of a healthy man with a missing upper right lateral incisor (#12) and canine (#13) who requested for a permanent prosthetic replacement due to a history of trauma. An orthodontic alignment was performed to idealise the spaces in the upper and lower arches. A horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR) was then performed on the residual ridge on #12 and #13 using the xenograft [Cerabone ®, Botiss gmbh, Berlin, Germany] and resorbable collagen membrane (Lyoplant®). After 12 months, the radiographic analysis showed apparent bone-fill with an adequate horizontal bone gain which was further analysed using a specialized software for digital implant planning [R2GATE v1.1.1; Megagen, Daegu, Korea]. Two short dental implants (7.0 mm) were incorporated as part of the overall treatment plan. In this case, the utilization of the short implants on a previously augmented ridge with the aid of a digital implant planning showed excellent an clinical outcome.
