    (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2024-11-30)
    Ameer Fuhaili Mohamad Hashim Othman
    ;
    Mohamad Hashim Othman
    Abstract: Tertiary students' knowledge of kratom predominantly focuses on its effects and legal implications, overlooking the crucial understanding of different kratom leaf veins. Recognizing these vein types is essential for comprehending the potential consequences of kratom misuse. This study addresses concerns about the likelihood of tertiary students engaging in kratom abuse due to its easy accessibility and affordability. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge levels of three types of kratom veins inhalants—white, red, and green—among male and female tertiary students, utilizing a cross-sectional design with quantitative data collected from 296 students through Google Forms. The analysis reveals gender-based disparities in knowledge percentages for each vein type. The analysis presented in Figure 1 accentuates significant disparities in knowledge levels between male and female respondents regarding various colours of kratom veins. Notably, males consistently exhibit superior knowledge, with a substantial percentage of 19.9% for the white vein compared to their female counterparts. This trend persists with the red vein, where males outperform females, achieving a knowledge percentage of 15.9%, indicating a persistent gender-based difference in understanding kratom vein colours among tertiary students. The examination extends to the green vein, with males demonstrating a higher knowledge percentage of 10.1% compared to females. Despite the widespread use of kratom, particularly among adolescents in substance abuse, a substantial knowledge gap exists among tertiary students regarding various kratom vein types. Tailoring educational efforts to consider these multifaceted factors is crucial for promoting inclusivity, equitable knowledge distribution, and fostering a comprehensive understanding of kratom within diverse populations.   Abstrak: Pengetahuan pelajar-pelajar tertiari tentang kratom lebih cenderung kepada kesan dan implikasi undang-undang, dengan memahami pemahaman yang penting mengenai pelbagai jenis urat daun kratom. Pemahaman terhadap jenis-jenis urat ini adalah kunci untuk memahami kesan pengaruh kratom. Kajian ini menimbulkan kebimbangan mengenai kemungkinan pelajar tertiari terlibat dalam pengaruh dan harga yang mampu disebabkan kemudahan. Objektif kajian adalah menilai tahap pengetahuan terhadap tiga jenis urat kratom - putih, merah, dan hijau - di kalangan pelajar lelaki dan perempuan tertiari. Reka bentuk rentas-seksyen digunakan dengan mengumpulkan data kuantitatif daripada 296 pelajar melalui Google Forms. Analisis menunjukkan perbezaan berdasarkan jantina dalam peratusan pengetahuan bagi setiap jenis urat. Rajah 1 menunjukkan perbezaan yang ketara dalam tahap pengetahuan antara responden lelaki dan perempuan mengenai pelbagai warna urat kratom. Lelaki menunjukkan pengetahuan yang lebih tinggi secara konsisten, dengan peratusan ketara sebanyak 19.9% untuk urat putih berbanding perempuan. Trend ini berterusan dengan urat merah, di mana lelaki melebihi perempuan, mencapai peratusan pengetahuan sebanyak 15.9%, menunjukkan perbezaan yang berterusan berdasarkan jantina dalam pemahaman warna urat kratom di kalangan pelajar tertiari. Pemeriksaan melibatkan urat hijau, dengan lelaki menunjukkan peratusan pengetahuan yang lebih tinggi sebanyak 10.1% berbanding dengan perempuan. Walaupun penggunaan kratom yang meluas, terutamanya di kalangan remaja dalam pengaruh bahan, terdapat jurang pengetahuan yang besar di kalangan pelajar tertiari mengenai pelbagai jenis urat kratom. Penyesuaian usaha pendidikan untuk mengkaji faktor-faktor yang berbeza ini adalah penting untuk mempromosikan inklusiviti, pengagihan pengetahuan yang saksama, dan memahami pemahaman yang menyeluruh tentang kratom dalam kalangan populasi yang pelbagai.

    A Maturity Model (MM) is essential for laboratories aiming to improve and compete globally. Despite being accredited for over 20 years, some laboratories lack evidence of system maturity necessary for international competitiveness. A higher maturity level indicates a robust quality management system, leading to improved efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction, while also assuring stakeholders, such as customers and regulatory bodies, of the laboratory's commitment to continuous improvement. The MM is designed to assess the success of laboratory processes, management styles, and the development of quality management practices, based on the 4M model (Manpower, Method, Machine, Material). The MM was developed using Analytes Accurate Certain Score (AACS) for the ten most common tests and System Maturity Scores (SMS), which incorporate proficiency testing and audit scores over two accreditation cycles (six years). While the model identifies inefficiencies, it helps organizations pinpoint areas of improvement and devise strategies to enhance their operations. This study applied the MM to a commercial laboratory, ABC (anonymized), accredited since the early 1990s and having undergone eight assessment cycles. The laboratory was found to be at a “leading” maturity level with a score above 80%, although improvements are still needed. Key areas for improvement include: 1) **Manpower**: maintaining competent staff by adjusting management strategies, 2) **Method**: validating all in-house methods according to Analytical Laboratory Accreditation Criteria Committee (ALACC) guidelines, 3) **Machine**: applying good laboratory practices (GLP) for equipment sharing, especially for specific analytes, and 4) **Material**: ensuring metrologically traceable reference materials and proficiency testing for all analytes. These improvements will help the laboratory further enhance its global competitiveness.

    Arabic communication possesses distinct characteristics that set it apart from other cultures. Understanding the specific aspects of Arabic communication is crucial, particularly for public relations officers who interact with Arab patients in healthcare settings. The increasing language and communication barriers between healthcare providers and Arab patients necessitate the involvement of public relations officers as mediators, interpreters, or facilitators. However, non-native Arabic speakers among public relations officers until now face misconception and confusion of task, lack of knowledge on Arabic communication and Arabic culture during their daily work at the healthcare centers. Therefore, this study aims to identify the challenges faced by public relation officers in healthcare centers when attending to Arab patients and to analyze the needs of these officers toward the development of a comprehensive Arabic communication model for public relations in the healthcareindustry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five public relation officers from different healthcare centers in Kuala Lumpur. The collected data was analyzed using NVivo data analysis software version 12. This qualitative research incorporatesHutchinson and Waters' (1987) theory of needs analysis, focusing on three key components: necessities, lacks, and wants. The findings reveal that public relations officers encounter difficulties due to the lack of references or guidelines on Arabic communication, an uncooperative working environment, language barriers in translating medical terminology, and the use of uncommon Arabic dialects. The study also highlights the PR officers' pressing needs, which include the implementation of an Arabic communication model as a guiding framework for communication with Arab patients, as well as the enhancement of their communication skills and Arabic language proficiency to ensure high-quality service provision to Arab patients in healthcare centers

    A Preliminary Review of Consumer Comsumption Value Perceptions of 5G Technology in Malaysia
    (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2024-11-30)
    Abedin Md Shams
    ;

    ;
    Wan Rasyidah Wan Nawang
    Abstract: The study focuses on purchasing intentions for fifth generation (5G) technology using Sheth and colleagues' 1991 model of consumption values, which considers five consumption values which are social value, emotional value, functional value, conditional value, and epistemic value. The value of these values has been expected to be significant in the past and lead to purchase intentions for 5G technology. Since the advancement of information technology (IT), 5G technology has become a new revolution in the field of technology and networks. The high-speed processing of data supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is what 5G technology and IT network is all about. The main issue in the current market is that consumers are having difficulty accepting the value proposition provided by several companies. As a result, consumers are becoming more sceptical of the claims made by companies about their products and services. Malaysian consumers are not enthusiastic about using 5G technology, which is a hurdle for companies in selling their technology to the customers in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between consumption value and purchase intention.   Abstrak: Kajian ini memberi tumpuan kepada niat pelanggan untuk membeli teknologi 5G dengan menggunakan model nilai penggunaan dari Sheth (1991), yang mempertimbangkan lima nilai penggunaannya iaitu nilai sosial, nilai fungsi, nilai bersyarat dan nilai epikstemik. Nilai-nilai ini telah dijangka sejak dulu dan membawa kepada inovasi pengguna kini yang mempengaruhi niat pembeli untuk membeli perkhidmatan teknologi 5G. Sejak bermula kemajuan teknologi maklumat, perkhidmatam teknologi 5G telah menjadi revolusi baharu dalam bidang teknologi dan rangkaian. Pemprosesan data berkelajuan tinggi ini disokong oleh kecerdasan buatan (AI) dan pembelajaran mesin (ML) yang membawa maksud teknologi 5G dan rangkaian teknologi secara keseluruhan. Isu utama dalam pasaran semasa ialah pengguna menghadapi kesukaran untuk menerima cadangan nilai yang disedikan oleh beberapa Syarikat. Akibatnya, pengguna menjadi ragu-ragu terhadap justifikasi yang dibuat oleh Syarikat mengenai produk dan perkhidmatan mereka. Pengguna Malaysia tidak teruja untuk menggunakan teknologi 5G, yang juga merupakan halangan bagi Syarikat dalam mempromosikan pekhidmatan teknologi mereka kepada pelanggan di Malaysia. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk mengkaji hubungan antara nilai penggunaan iaitu mengrakumi, nilai fungsian, nilai sosial, nilai bersyarat, nilai epistemic dan nilai emosi terhadap inovasi pelanggan dan membawa kepada niat membeli pekhidmatan 5G.

    Thinavan Periyayya
    Abstract: This study delves into the nuanced perceptions of gangs and gangsterism in Malaysia through the lens of law enforcement officers, crime reporters, and crime analysts. Using a qualitative approach, the research explores how these stakeholders define gangs, the racial and ethnic characteristics associated with gang membership, the underlying motivations for joining gangs, and the strategies proposed to curb gang activities. Through in-depth interviews and secondary data analysis, the study uncovers the complex interplay of socio-economic factors, such as underdevelopment, marginalization, and economic downturns, which drive individuals towards gang affiliation. Additionally, it highlights psychological and behavioural influences that contribute to gang membership. The research emphasizes the importance of developing comprehensive intervention strategies that not only focus on prevention and rehabilitation but also foster community engagement. These strategies should be tailored to address the unique socio-cultural dynamics of Malaysia, recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of those involved in or affected by gang activities. The findings underscore the necessity for a multi-faceted approach that integrates efforts from various sectors, including law enforcement, social services, and the community, to effectively combat the gang phenomenon in Malaysia. By providing a detailed understanding of the perceptions and proposed solutions from key stakeholders, this study contributes valuable insights into the ongoing discourse on gangsterism and offers practical recommendations for policy and practice.   Abstrak: Kajian ini meneroka persepsi yang terperinci mengenai geng dan gangsterisme di Malaysia melalui perspektif pegawai penguatkuasa undang-undang, wartawan jenayah, dan penganalisis jenayah. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif holistik, penyelidikan ini mengkaji bagaimana pihak berkepentingan ini mentakrifkan geng, ciri-ciri kaum dan etnik yang berkaitan dengan keahlian geng, motivasi asas untuk menyertai geng, dan strategi yang dicadangkan untuk membendung aktiviti geng. Melalui temu bual mendalam dan analisis data sekunder, kajian ini membongkar interaksi kompleks faktor sosio-ekonomi seperti kemunduran, peminggiran, dan kemerosotan ekonomi yang mendorong individu untuk menyertai geng. Selain itu, ia menyoroti pengaruh psikologi dan tingkah laku yang menyumbang kepada keahlian geng. Penyelidikan ini menekankan kepentingan membangunkan strategi campur tangan yang komprehensif yang bukan sahaja menumpukan kepada pencegahan dan pemulihan tetapi juga memupuk penglibatan komuniti. Strategi-strategi ini harus disesuaikan untuk menangani dinamik sosio-budaya yang unik di Malaysia, mengiktiraf latar belakang dan pengalaman yang berbeza bagi mereka yang terlibat atau terkesan oleh aktiviti geng. Penemuan ini menegaskan keperluan untuk pendekatan pelbagai aspek yang mengintegrasikan usaha dari pelbagai sektor termasuk penguatkuasaan undang-undang, perkhidmatan sosial, dan komuniti untuk memerangi fenomena geng di Malaysia dengan berkesan. Dengan menyediakan pemahaman terperinci mengenai persepsi dan penyelesaian yang dicadangkan daripada pihak berkepentingan utama, kajian ini menyumbang pandangan yang berharga dalam wacana berterusan mengenai gangsterisme dan menawarkan cadangan praktikal untuk dasar dan amalan.

    Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the commonest primary tumor in the liver. It has been shown to have a strong association with hepatitis B and C. HCC not only commonly metastases to the other part of the liver but also commonly metastases to the lung. Involvements of upper gastrointestinal organs are rare. We report a case of hepatocellular carcinoma with duodenal metastases. Method: A 58 years old Chinese man with a background history of hepatitis B presented with right hypochondrium pain. No jaundice or any constitutional symptoms noted. Physical exams revealed irregular right hypochondrium mass. No ascites palpable. Most blood investigation was unremarkable except for a raised Alpha fetoprotein of 2920. Imaging studies confirmed a diagnosis of a segment 4B HCC with enlarged portal nodes and left portal vein thrombosis. Despite his Childs score A, he was deemed inoperable and subjected to chemoembolization. During a subsequent follow up, he developed symptomatic anaemia with hemoglobin level of 6.2 g/dl. He developed multiple episodes of anaemia and Upper GI endoscopy shows a bleeding tumor at first part of duodenum extending to the second. Biopsy revealed as metastatic HCC. Results: Conclusions: Hepatocellular carcinoma is known to spread via haematogenous, lymphatics or trancoelomic. The usual sites of metastases are lung, regional lymph nodes and bones. Metastases via direct spread are uncommon hence the rarity of metastases to other upper gastrointestinal organs especially small bowel. This presentation imposed a treatment dilemma due to the limited approach to both primary and the metastases lesion.

    This study aims to examine the opinions of Jamal al-Banna and Jasser Auda regarding abrogation in religious texts. Both figures are included in this study because they have different backgrounds of thought: Jamal al-Banna is known for his liberal thinking,while Jasser Auda is known as a progressive thinker who still follows the style of thought of mainstream scholars. This research is a qualitative-extractive study, with the main references being their two books related to abrogation:Tafnid Da’wa al-Naskh fi al-Quran al-Karimby Jamal al-Banna andNaqd Nadzariyyah al-Naskh: Bahtsun fi Fiqh Maqashid al-Syariahby Jasser Auda. Based on the research results, both argue that there is no abrogation in religious texts. One of the reasons they provide is that there is no strong evidence explaining the existence of abrogation in religious texts, especially given the disputes among scholars regarding the abrogating verse and the abrogated verse. According to both of them, abrogation has implications for changes in theshariah (Islamic law), so the evidence supporting its existence must be strong.

    (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2024-12-01)
    Abdul Kamil
    This article aims to examine the concept of al-hadith al-Gharib from the perspective of hadith scholars. The primary research questions address: (1) What defines al-hadith al-Gharib in the terminology of hadith science? (2) How can the authenticity of al-hadith al-Gharib be assessed? (3) What are the debates among scholars regarding the authority of al-hadith al-Gharib? This study is categorized as library research, focusing on the concepts of al-hadith al-Gharib, its authenticity, and its authority. The findings indicate that al-hadith al-Gharib refers to a narration reported by a single narrator at any point in the chain of transmission, whether at the beginning, middle, or end of the isnad. Regarding authenticity, al-hadith al-Gharib may be classified as either authentic—such as sahih or hasan hadith—or inauthentic, such as da'if or fabricated hadith. The process of determining the authenticity of al-hadith al-Gharib primarily involves assessing the reliability of the singular narrator and comparing the hadith with other transmission chains. A hadith narrated by a trustworthy individual that does not contradict other reliable traditions is deemed authentic, while contradictory or unreliable narrations are considered weak. Regarding authority, scholars differ in their evaluation of al-hadith al-Gharib . The majority of scholars maintain that al-hadith al-Gharib  can serve as a legal basis if it is authentic. In contrast, the Mu'tazilites reject the use of Ahad (single-narrator) hadith as a source of law. Meanwhile, the Hanafi school accepts al-hadith al-Gharib  as a legal foundation, provided it is not part of the ‘umum al-balwa (general public affairs).

    The storytellers (quṣṣāṣ) and righteous individuals (al-Ṣāliḥīn) are among those who frequently narrate hadiths, but Nawawi in the introduction of Sahih Muslim doubts the authenticity of their narrations, as they are considered to often fabricate hadiths. Therefore, this article will attempt to answer how the criteria for storytellers (quṣṣāṣ) and righteous individuals (al-Shalihin) are viewed by hadith scholars and the implications of both on hadith criticism. Through literature review, whether through classical texts, journals, or relevant books on the topic, the author found that there are two typologies of storytellers: the official storytellers (al-qussas al-rasmi) and the unofficial storytellers (al-qussas tatahwwu’i syakhsyi). Meanwhile, the role of the righteous individuals (al-Ṣāliḥīn) here is portrayed as spreading the fabrications of the storytellers (al-Quṣṣāṣ).

    Educational equity remains a pressing global challenge, particularly for marginalized and economically disadvantaged groups who face significant barriers to accessing quality education. Zakat, an Islamic financial practice rooted in the redistribution of wealth, has emerged as a potential solution to address these disparities. However, despite its transformative potential, the role of zakat in promoting educational equity has not been fully realized due to systemic challenges in its implementation and distribution. This study aims to comprehensively review existing evidence on the contributions of zakat to educational equity, identify key challenges in its implementation, and examine its connections to critical themes such as educational support, zakat recipients, empowerment programs, and zakat distribution. A systematic literature review methodology was employed, utilizing Scopus AI to identify and analyze peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, and book chapters published between 2010 and 2025. The findings reveal that zakat significantly improves educational outcomes by providing financial aid, enhancing academic performance, and reducing barriers to participation for disadvantaged students, particularly in Malaysia, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Empowerment programs funded by zakat further foster holistic development by combining material support with skill-building and mentorship, enabling recipients to break free from cycles of poverty. However, challenges such as inequitable distribution, rigid eligibility criteria, and limited collaboration between stakeholders hinder its effectiveness. The study underscores the importance of transparent and inclusive zakat mechanisms, aligning initiatives with broader educational policies, and adopting innovative approaches like microfinance programs to enhance sustainability. The implications of this research extend to policymakers, zakat institutions, and educators, offering actionable insights into designing equitable and scalable zakat programs. By integrating zakat with global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this study highlights its potential to advance educational equity and foster inclusive development. Future research should explore cross-regional comparisons and long-term impacts to further strengthen these efforts.

    Scientific studies have revealed that a large percentage of Malaysian society suffers from psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, stress, schizophrenia and others, which is the biggest health problem among Malaysians after heart disease. The aim of this study is to explain the reasons for the prevalence of these psychological illnesses and to analyse the prevention methods, approaches and treatment of psychological illnesses according to Shariah scholars and then to show a therapeutic and preventive approach to psychological illnesses according to Shariah, using the inductive and analytical approach. The study concluded that psychiatrists have not clarified the exact causes of mental illness, but they suggested that they are the result of genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors. Among the reasons mentioned by Shariah scholars are love of the world, committing sins, distance from Allah S.W.T., ignorance of religion, isolation, family and environment. The therapeutic and preventive model for contemporary psychological illnesses in Malaysia consists of the following methods such as seeking Islamic knowledge, belief in Allah S.W.T and the Last Day, patience and striving for reward, good deeds, good company, reading the Quran, reflecting on it and acting upon it (the Quran), remembrance and gratitude to Allah S.W.T., prayings on the Messenger of Allah S.W.T., supplication, treatment with legal ruqyah and psychological medicine, striving to eliminate the causes that cause sorrow and reaching the causes that cause joy. There are studies and testimonies from psychiatrists that confirm these methods and prove their effectiveness in preventing and treating mental illness. The study also contains important recommendations for the parties concerned in this matter.
