Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the development of religious tolerance model among multi-ethnic youths in Malaysia. A few constructs are identified to develop religious tolerance model through past researchs and theory. The samples consist of 500 youths among Malay, Chinese and Indian from five different states in Malaysia: Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Johor. Data were collected using Socio-religious tolerance questionnaire and the development model is based on planned behaviour theory. The data of validity and reliability are determined by pilot test and Cronbach Alpha for every item and construct. Data were analyses in descriptive and statistical inference, which is Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used in develop religious tolerance model fit. Before data was analysed, the data will go through to Confirmation Factor Analysis (CFA) to make sure the data is reliable to use and can proceed to measurement and structural model. The results show that religious tolerance model is fit when some items and constructs are deleted. The religious tolerance model shows that perception and attitude contribute to religious tolerance behaviour. However, both of these two factors only contribute to 41% towards respondents' religious tolerance behaviour. This findings indicate that, other than attitude and perception factors, there are others factor need to identify in contribute to religious tolerance behaviour. The implications of this study, Malaysians need to be exposed thoroughly to the association and interaction between people of other faiths or ethnics. Bad attitudes such as prejudice, stereotype, prejudice, racism, discrimination and ethnocentrism should be avoided to keep harmony living.
