This study aims to develop a ta‘āwun-based social welfare model experienced by masjids in Malaysia. The study focused on qualitative methods through an interview approach with the 14 best masjids from all states in Malaysia. Then, the study analyzed the data using the ATLAS ti software thematically and adapted the case study and grounded theory design. The study’s results found that there are three levels of masjids in practising ta‘āwun-based social welfare. The first level is about the identified principles of the model, which are al-‘adālah (justice), al-waqi‘iyyah (realistic), al-mas‘uliyyah (responsible) and al-insāniyyah (humanity). The second level is related to implementing the model, including factors, initiatives and welfare recipients. The third level concerns the model’s implications, containing six cores: religious demand, management system, welfare institutions, social relations, economic empowerment, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, the existence of this model becomes a guide to expanding the concept of ta‘āwun in welfare and developing a management system that involves masjids, especially in Malaysia.
