Abstract

Ḥadīth is Islamic tradition, which is ascribed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from the aspects of his verbatim, deeds, approvals and disapprovals. In the hierarchy of Islamic epistemology, al-Ḥadīth is second after the Quran, which is agreed upon by the majority of reputable Muslim scholars to be taken as reference in solving issues of the ummah. In 2014, the anti-ḥadīth phenomenon made its comeback to the Malaysian arena of intellectual debate, espceially in post-Seminar Pemikiran Dr. Kassim Ahmad: Satu Penilaian. This article purports to deduce some confusions about Islamic teachings as found in Kassim Ahmad’s keynote paper entitled: Ucapan Kepada Konferensi Politik Nasional Untuk Menentukan Hala tuju Negara Malaya Untuk Tiga Puluh Tahun Akan Datang. Analysis on this paper is undertaken by applying these methods: content analysis and cross reference to the two banned books of Kassim Ahmad by the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN). This analysis has found that Kassim Ahmad’s paper contains two elements of anti-Hadīth claim, namely: (1) Imam al-Shāfi’ī as the earliest scholar who compels that ḥadīth is taken as a source for Islamic jurisprudence and (2) ḥadīth does not interpret the Quran, but only Quran interprets the Quran from a so-called scientific approach. This article will strengthen the charges made by the Religious office against Kassim Ahmad’s offences of insulting Islamic religion and disobeying Federal Territories Fatwa in relation to anti-ḥadīth Group.
