God’s Gifted Child: The Abandonment of Children Due to Low Economic Conditions in The Perspective of Islam

Children play a crucial role in advancing the ideals of a nation. Meeting their physical and spiritual needs is essential, hence both family and local law play an important part in ensuring their welfare. The high number of 5,953 reported cases of child neglect in 2021 has drawn attention and sparked interest among researchers. Based on initial observations, economic conditions were identified as a significant cause of the rampant cases of child neglect. Unfortunately, the law in Indonesia has failed to provide effective solutions. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the phenomenon of child neglect resulting from low economic status from an Islamic perspective and explore potential solutions within Islam. Researchers utilize both the Maqasid al-Shariah Theory and the Social Exchange Theory. They employ the concept of Hermeneutics, which is based on the Al-Quran and Hadith. The method of investigation follows a qualitative approach using normative law. The data sources include document and literature studies, as well as interviews and observations. The study indicates that child neglect may result from parents' unpreparedness, as outlined in the Al-Quran and Hadith regarding physical, mental, and financial readiness for marriage. Neglecting a child is prohibited under Islamic law and subject to punishment. Hence, Islam does not condone neglect under any circumstances. To minimize the likelihood of neglect, prospective parents should take measures to ensure their economic and mental preparedness for the parenting role. The researchers recommend providing a platform that mediates between orphanages or qualified foster parents and potential parents.
