dc.description.abstractDepression is a disorder that involves the change of thoughts, emotions, feelings and behaviors that causes a person's daily life to be difficult; and if not treated it will bringa bad impact on society. Normally, people experience different types of emotions, such as moodiness, sadness, anxiety and give up. But if the feeling is excessive and prolonged it will lead to severe mental health problems. Therefore, this article will discuss the history progress of depression from Western and Islamic scholars' perspectivesand focus on definitions and symptoms of depression from the affective, cognitive, behavioral and physiological aspects experienced by individuals with depression. This study uses a qualitative methodology with analysis document approach. Hence, the collection of research data uses past studies such as books, thesis, articles, journals and papers. The result of the study finds that depression has existed sinceancient times and if it is not properly handled, it maylead to a serious mental illness.The concept of depression explains itis due to the long-suffering sadness. Thus depression symptoms experiencedby an individual must be handled early to avoid badquality of life including the issue of self-harmingand suicide.en_US
