Abstract

The study aimed to explore the dependency of Yemeni university youth on religious programs as a source of information about religious extremism, and to investigate the effects of this dependency. To achieve this objective, the survey method was used through which a questionnaire was administered to a sample of 300 students who were randomly selected from Yemeni universities. The results revealed that 72% of the respondents rely on religious programs at a large and medium level as a source of information about religious extremism. The specialized religious channels (Iqraa & Al Resalah) came first among the satellite channels that the respondents prefer to watch their religious programs. Cognitive effects represent the prominent effects of the dependency of respondents on religious programs followed by behavioral and emotional effects. The results indicated a positive correlation between respondents’ dependency on religious programs as a source of information about religious extremism and the effects of this dependency, and this correlation increases with the presence of (respondents' confidence in satellite channels) as a mediator variable. The findings also showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the effects of dependency on religious programs as a source of information about religious extremism due to the difference in gender, specialization, or respondents’ place of birth, with the exception of differences in cognitive effects due to the difference in the place of birth, and the differences came in favor of the respondents born in the countryside.
