Abstract

The study aimed to identify the role of social media in reducing hate speech, and to demonstrate the impact of this discourse on the collective culture of Palestinian soci-ety, and to demonstrate the ability of social media to form a public opinion against hate speech. The study also aims to reveal whether there are statistically significant differences. With regard to the opinions of the respondents towards the problem of the study due to the variables of academic specialization and level of participation.The study followed the survey method, and through it, the method of media practice survey was employed, and the researcher used the questionnaire on an intentional sample of lecturers and students from media colleges in some Palestinian universities in the Gaza Strip, consisting of (55) individuals.The study concluded with a set of re-sults, the most important of which is that the study showed that social media is an effective tool for influencing public opinion, and it was also found that the level of exposure of the study sample to social media is focused on receiving more than par-ticipation and influence. The study also showed that there is a direct relationship be-tween academic specialization and the level of participation. On the role of social media in reducing hate speech. Among the most important recommendations of the study is the organization of media initiatives through social media to enhance societal awareness of hate speech, launching media campaigns to report hate speech through social media, enacting laws and legislation, and including clauses in codes of conduct for media institutions to limit hate speech.
