Patients’ Beliefs and the Selection of Periodontal Regenerative Materials Among Periodontal Patients Attending Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM): A Pilot Study

Introduction: Periodontal regenerative materials are required to regenerate the new periodontal supporting apparatus. There are various types of regenerative materials used in this surgery including autografts, allografts, xenografts (bovine and porcine based materials), alloplasts or synthetic materials which derived from many different sources. Aims: This study objective aimed to determine the patient’s acceptance and correlation of patients’ beliefs and types of periodontal regenerative materials. Methods: A total of 60 respondents were gathered in our pilot study to participate in a questionnaire (content validated, pre-tested) in Dental Polyclinic, Faculty of
Dentistry, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur. Demographic data, patients’ acceptance towards periodontal regenerative materials and the correlations of patients’ beliefs (Religion Orientation Revised scale) and the selection of various periodontal regenerative materials were recorded. Data were analysed using SPSS version 27.0 and P< 0.05 at 95% confident interval is considered as statistically significant. Results: The mean age of respondents was 45.4 (SD 14.92) years old. Most of them were (60.0%) female and (40.0%) male patients had participated in this study with Malay and Islam religion was predominant. The respondents who have strongest beliefs based on internal religious orientation (IRO) highly accepted autologous bone grafts (0.378, 0.003), bovine xenografts (0.279, 0.031), and synthetic grafts (0.244, 0.061) as materials of choice. However, they tend to refuse porcine xenografts (-0.325, 0.011) as periodontal regenerative materials in their treatment modalities. Conclusion: In conclusion, people who have strongest beliefs will be influenced in choosing the various periodontal regenerative material based on their religion.
