Abstract
Film translation plays an important role in transferring information or culture to the audience in the Target Language (TL). Translating culture is a difficult thing and it requires a good translation technique and strategies to guarantee that the translation is well-delivered and high quality. This study is to identify the elements of ecological culture, material culture and social culture found in the animated film Upin Ipin The Movie: Geng Pengembaraan Bermula based on the theory of Peter Newmark (1988) and to study the translation style used by the translator based on the theory of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) and find out the effect of the translation strategies used in this film. This study uses the qualitative approach of content analysis as the main approach to identify the cultural terms in the film. The results of the study identified that there are 40 cultural terms and only 20 cultural terms were analyzed which include ecological culture, material culture and social culture as well as six translation styles used by translators to translate cultural terms which are borrowing, calque, modulation, literal translation, equivalence and adaptation. Meanwhile, the results of the study also found that the effect of the translation of the film is divided into three, i.e. the translation is well-delivered in the target language, there is an ambiguity of meaning in the target language and there is a deviation of the meaning from the original meaning of the source language (SL).
