Abstract
Historically, studies on the evolution of Quranic teaching and learning (PdP) for hearing-impaired students (OKU Pendengaran) are limited. This is because many studies focus only on issues such as limited teacher knowledge, inadequate teaching skills, and an unsuitable Islamic education curriculum (Quranic recitation). Therefore, this study is conducted to examine the evolution of Quranic PdP for the hearing-impaired in Malaysia through five main objectives: to explore the evolution of Quranic PdP for hearing-impaired students in the national education system, to examine the evolution of teacher knowledge in Quranic teaching for hearing-impaired students, to analyze the evolution of teaching skills among teachers for hearing-impaired students, to study the evolution of teacher personality in Quranic instruction for hearing-impaired students, and to propose improvements in Quranic PdP for this group. This research employs a qualitative case study method with purposive sampling, involving eight experts as informants from the Special Education Division (BPKhas), Ministry of Education (KPM) teachers, and NGO teachers with varied experience. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Overall, the findings show an evolution of Quranic PdP under the Special Education Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM), within the Malaysian education system. Furthermore, the results indicate an evolution in Quranic PdP for hearing-impaired students involving the Special Education Division. In addition, findings regarding the competencies of KPM and NGO teachers highlight an evolution across three elements: teacher knowledge, teaching skills, and teacher personality, reflecting changes over different periods. As a result of this evolution, teachers have proposed improvements in Quranic PdP for hearing-impaired students. The impact of this study’s findings includes the documentation of the historical development of Quranic PdP for hearing-impaired students, the enhancement of teacher knowledge, skills, and personality, and recommended improvements for Quranic PdP in this field.
