The objective of this study is to explain the approach of ijtihad through sadd al-dharā’iʿ according to the views of al-Qarāfiy and al-Shāṭibiyy. This study is a library research in nature that is evaluating the critical characteristics of al-dhara’iʿ and its arguments in legal sources based on sadd al-dharā’iʿ . By analyzing the position of al-dharā’iʿ through the discussion of the mujtahids, this study found that aldharā’iʿ has certain characteristics and elements that are very specific and distinctive. A mujtahid or mufti needs to understand and be an expert in the process of ijtihad based on sadd al-dharā’iʿ . It strongly supports the texts of Shara’ whether general or specific in explaining the hukm of prohibiting something.
