Abstract
The subject of criticizing hadiths relates to studying the chains of narration (sanad) and
their texts collectively. Therefore, all hadiths, in their entirety, with their chains and
texts, are eligible for critical examination. One of these subjects is the biography and
military expeditions (Maghazi), which interests scholars throughout history due to its
distinctive nature compared to other subjects. This study aims to highlight the
methodologies of critiquing biographical narratives by comparing the books of Nur al-
Din al-Halabi and Akram Diya al-'Umari, and elucidating the significant factors
influencing the development of their critique methodologies. Subsequently, scientific
guidelines for dealing with biographical narratives based on these methodologies are
derived. The research problem arises from the personal inclinations of these two
scholars in addressing issues related to the Prophet's biography, which resulted in
differences in their critique methodologies of biographical narratives. The researcher
follows four methodologies: inductive, analytical, comparative, and critical. In the first
part, the researcher comprehends the introductory issues of critiquing biographical
narratives, including their concept, history, scholars' contributions, and the personalities
of Nur al-Din al-Halabi and Akram Diya al-'Umari to highlight their contributions to
critiquing biographical narratives. In the second part, the researcher endeavors to
analyze their methodologies in critiquing biographical narratives through their books,
"al-Sirah al-Halabiyyah" and "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah al-Sahihah," and extract the
similarities and differences in their critique methodologies, followed by identifying the
influencing factors in the development of critique methodologies of biographical
narratives. Finally, the researcher establishes scientific guidelines for dealing with
Prophetic biographical narratives and explains their practical implementation. One of
the key findings of the researcher is that al-Halabi's methodology is influenced by
factors such as Sufism, the Shafi'i school of thought, and his Arab background, while
al-'Umari's methodology is influenced by his background as a historian and his
application of the methodologies of Hadith scholars. This divergence in their critique
methodologies of biographical narratives leads to the formulation of specific guidelines
for dealing with biographical narratives.
