Abstract

After De Saussure, the concept of text began to develop by Harris (1952), Chomsky (1957), Van Dyke (1972) and then as a theory by DeBojerand and Dressler (1981) Introduction to Text Linguistics. Seven text criteria were developed; perhaps the foremost criterions of coherence and cohesion. Arab linguists stated that the former Arab scholars were limited to sentences and did not go beyond it, the text was anonymous. As if they were devoid of the text idea. Therefore, this paper examines the extent of text knowledge and its standards by Arab scholars. Through descriptive approach; the findings demonstrated that the interpreters and rhetoricians ancients, were not limited to sentences. Their research did not stop at sentence edge; when they adopted the text as one integrated piece, practiced all text's standards sporadically but not combined together, particularly coherence and cohesion standards. This emphasize the significant of USIM's integration of Naqli and Aqli.
