Publication An Analysis Of Rhetorical Moves In Abstracts For Conference Proceedings(OCERINT International Organization Center of Academic Research, 2016) ;Harison M. Sidek ;Noor Saazai Mat Saad ;Baharun, HazleenaMohd Muzhafar IdrusAn abstract plays a pivotal role because it represents the summary of the entire article. Therefore, it is the first thing that readers evaluate to determine if they should read the entire article. Hence, it is imperative for academics to provide an abstract that includes all essential rhetorical moves when writing an academic article. In lieu of this, the current study attempted to examine whether the abstracts provided in conference proceedings include the essential rhetorical moves and whether the moves are presented in the sequence according to the selected classification. The data for this study were collected using purposive sampling from 23 abstracts of empirical- based studies in nature from the selected conference. The abstracts were written in the English language and authored by academics in the field of language and education from higher institutions in various countries. Hyland's (2000) five- moves classification of rhetorical moves was used as the coding in identifying the moves structure of the selected abstracts in this study. Other moves that emerged from the selected abstracts were added to Hyland's (2000) classification. The moves structure data were analyzed using manifest content analysis while the sequence of moves data were analyzed using latent content analysis. The findings show that the majority of the abstract only partially contains the rhetorical moves as suggested by Hyland (2000) with a variety of moves sequence. Apart from Hyland's (2000) five-moves, some authors included the theoretical aspect of their study in their abstracts. The implications of the findings were discussed within the context of professional development among higher institutions academics, particularly in academic abstract writing. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Economic Growth And Falah(The International Journal Research Publications, 2015) ;Mohd Dali, Nuradli Ridzwan Shah ;Abdul Hamid, Hanifah ;Mohd Zohdi,M.A. ;Baharun, HazleenaTun Nur Afizah Zainal AriffEconomic growth is important in determining the overall economic condition of a country. The objective of this paper is to identify if the Islamization of the conventional growth theory can be applied towards the theory of Islamic economic growth. The findings revealed that the application of the existing growth model might not be appropriate in measuring growth according to the Islamic goals of growth. Therefore, the introduction of a unique measurement of economic growth according to Islamic perspective is warranted. This is because an attempt to introduce a comprehensive growth model in attaining falah maximization for OIC countries according to the Islamic perspectives using the conventional growth theory is unsuccessful. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Enhancing EFL Learners' Language Development Through Collaborative Tasks(Amer Scientific Publishers, 2017) ;Baharun, HazleenaZakaria, Abd RazakThis paper reports on a study that investigates the use of collaborative tasks to elicit Language Related Episodes (LREs) during learners' oral interaction. The study examines the frequency and nature of LREs generated by the participants during interaction in EFL speaking class. Nine language learners in groups of three participated in the study. They were instructed to complete two collaborative task types during which their performance was recorded. A qualitative analysis of the data revealed that the learners produced LREs during task completion for both tasks. The results obtained indicate that lexical LREs tend to be more frequent than other types of LREs in the interactions. The lexical LREs produced may create opportunities for language development among the EFL learners. Results of the study were discussed in light of pedagogical implications in a language classroom. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

The ability to read in English as the second language is important for academic advancement and for professional and selfdevelopment. Numerous experimental studies have shown strong evidence that extensive reading promotes substantial language level increase among students. The aim of this descriptive research is to investigate the effect of extensive reading on KUIM students' MUET achievements. The results highlight the existence of significant relationship between extensive reading practised by the subjects prior to entering KUIM for their degree programmes and their MUET achievements. Hence, this paper suggests two types of extensive reading programme, which can be adapted by English Language practitioners in developing good reading habits among students. Good reading habits can be cultivated. It should start right from young and should be nurtured well into adulthood. It is definitely important for students' academic advancement as well as professional and self- development. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Power and Voices of Authority in the Media Narrative of Malaysian Natives: Combining Corpus Linguistics and Discourse Analysis Approaches(Penerbit Univ Kebangsaan Malaysia, 2020) ;Ismail, Habibah ;Baharun, Hazleena ;Abdullah, HazlinaAbd Majid, Siti NorzaimalinaOrang Asli is a group of indigenous people who live according to a set of lifestyle and belief system and speak the native language. Previous studies have found that the Orang Ash are mostly depicted in the news media as backwards and dependent on others (Marlina Jamal & Shakila Abdul Manan, 2016). Such stereotypical depiction is shared with other research undertaken in various countries, particularly those in Canada or Australia. While many of these studies analysed findings from the media and communication or socio-cultural perspectives, the present study examines the representation of Orang Ash in Malaysian news/media by focusing on the use of language, i.e. linguistic viewpoint. The examination undertaken in this study focuses on headlines and lead paragraphs of one of the most influential English language newspapers in Malaysia. This study demonstrates the synergy of two methodological approaches in linguistics namely critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. Our main findings show how Orang Ash is consistently depicted around stereotypical news narratives such as issues of land rights and other resources. We also found that the voices of Orang Asli leaders are overshadowed by other authorities such as the state government. Thus, this study contributes to shed light on the linguistics resources and language patterns used to portray the Orang Asli in Malaysian newspapers.
