Publication Combating Drug Issue in Malaysia: Case Study Among Royal Malaysia Police Anti Narcotic Personnel(Faculty of Leadership and Management, 2024) ;Cairun Niza Mohamed Hashim ;Muhammad Fauzi OthmanMohd Zaliridzal ZakariaThe Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) of the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) is responsible for combating drug-related issues in Malaysia. Despite numerous eradication initiatives, Malaysia's drug problem continues to worsen. This study aims to investigate the challenges faced in Malaysia's efforts to eradicate drugs issues in Malaysia via the experience of Royal Malaysia Police Anti Narcotic Personnel. This study investigated the challenges faced in Malaysia's efforts to eradicate drugs by gathering primary data through interviews and secondary data from literature research. The primary data was collected using qualitative methodology through interviews with personnel from the NCID Selangor and Police Contingent Headquarters, Bukit Aman. The study objective is to analyze the drug situation in Malaysia from the NCID's perspective. The findings indicated that Malaysia's drug situation had become a security threat, influenced by legal and legislative factors, drug possession, smuggling, and distribution. However, all respondents agreed that the NCID was committed to its mission and had demonstrated success in several instances. Respondents discussed internal factors, such as the quality of human resources, integrity, and infrastructure and logistics growth, which posed barriers to drug combating efforts in Malaysia based on their personal experiences. External factors included geographic challenges, virtual threats, the presence of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), modus operandi, drug mules, and legal issues. The study concludes that the NCID remains crucial in combating drugs, but with the collaboration of all stakeholders, the highlighted concerns can be addressed, and prompt actions can be taken towards comprehensive eradication. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication The Drug Mule Experience: A Phenomenological Study of Malaysian Cases(Faculty of Leadership and Management, 2024) ;Sanjeev Singh A/L Ranjit Singh ;Muhammad Fauzi OthmanMohd Zaliridzal ZakariaThe identification of drug mules by drug dealers was established over 30 years ago, with notable cases of women playing leading roles in this crime. This trend has garnered attention not only in Malaysia but also in many other countries. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to gain a better understanding of the risk factors associated with recruitment as a drug mule, the motivations driving individuals to get involved in drug smuggling, and the physical and emotional impact of drug smuggling on these individuals. This study collected data from inmates at Sungai Buloh Prison, Selangor. As part of a qualitative research strategy, one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants. The sample consisted of five inmates with diverse criminal backgrounds, all housed in Sungai Buloh Prison, Selangor. Thematic analysis, coding, and categorization were employed to examine the information gathered during the interviews. The overall findings of the study indicate that female drug couriers in Malaysia often engage in this activity out of a strong desire to support their families. Additionally, this study has revealed that the precarious financial situations of women make them particularly vulnerable to recruitment as drug mules. The study delves into the historical and current circumstances of female drug couriers. By doing so, society can gain a deeper understanding of the factors that increase the risk of individuals becoming drug mules or motivate them to participate in drug smuggling. Consequently, this study has the potential to contribute to the development of early detection, education, and awareness campaigns focused on the dangers of drug smuggling via the drug mule method. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication An Emerging Framework: Literacy Training Module For Social Navigation Of Refugees(UMP Press, 2020) ;Suraini Mohd Ali ;Hazleena Baharun ;Hazlina Abdullah ;Noor Saazai Mat Saad ;Fariza Puteh Behak ;Habibah Ismail ;Mohd Muzhafar Idrus ;Dini FarhanaMohd Zaliridzal ZakariaRohingya refugees are a group of people who does not only have well-founded fear that they cannot return home, but are afraid of challenges awaiting them in the host country. Due to their traumatic past experiences, the Rohingya refugees rely much on their own community specifically the community leaders for assistance. However, the lack of community leaders as well as deficient hierarchical engagement with the leaders have created more difficulties for the refugees to seek for help. Social navigation for survival becomes an issue not only because they have language barriers but also internal conflicts on the imagined terrains (the hopes) and the unexpected circumstances (the difficulties) they encounter in the host country. This study aims to develop a literacy training module for Rohingya youth refugees to become social navigators. These refugees are expected to provide horizontal (peer-like) engagement to their community. To meet the aim of the study, 15 Rohingya youth refugees were recruited using a snowball sampling technique. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments were used: guided questionnaires, interviews and baseline tests. The themes from the data suggest that despite the challenges in language, the participants exhibited strong sense of brotherhood with other fellow refugees. Religion has developed a powerful bond that ignites their willingness to extend assistance to their community. However, the participants unfolded their uncertainties on the ways and resources available, to be of help. It is also apparent that, a conceptual framework suitable for this literacy training module for social navigation emerged from the overall data. The framework will serve as a guide to develop a Literacy Module to groom social navigators to help their people, the Rohingya refugees. Publication The Experience Of Self-Care Practices Among Malaysian Counselors In Crisis Work(Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2021-09-09) ;Nur Husna Mohd Hafiz ;Mohd Zaliridzal Zakaria ;Wan Mohd Fazrul Azdi Wan RazaliMuhammed Fauzi OthmanProviding crisis intervention and psychological support in crisis work requires counselor’s resiliency in coping with the massive adversity situations, multiple responsibilities, unexpected public demands, and their own psychological distress. Thus, self-care practices become a crucial need for counselors that provide themselves with relief, recovery, and growth ability. Although most of Malaysian counselors does not receive formal training in self-care, it does not limit them to practice self-care in their own ways. Thus, there is a need to explore what kind of self-care practices are applied by the counselors in crisis situation so that the experience can be referred as a guide the other counselors. This paper is a qualitative review of several selected studies related to the experience of self-care practices among Malaysian counselors. The search strategy was applied to collect relevant studies by using keywords such as "self-care", "Malaysian counselor" and "crisis experience". The search was limited to the publication of research articles and dissertation within years 2015 to 2021. Thematic analysis then was used to analyze the findings of the research. Three themes that reflect the phases of self-care experience emerge from the thematic analysis namely (1) before deployment, (2) during crisis work, and (3) after duty". Each theme has its own subthemes that reflects the areas of self-care practices. The analysis also reveals two important findings. Firstly, it initiates that self-care practices are a continuous process in counseling profession particularly in crisis work. Secondly, it is found that the Malaysian counselors put high priority on spiritual self-care practices. It is hoped that these findings may lead towards further research to deeply explore the self-care experience of Malaysian counselors without neglecting the essence of religious belief in the experience. Publication Pengalaman Amalan Percakapan Kendiri ( Self Talk) Dalam Kalangan Kaunselor Di Malaysia Semasa Mengendalikan Intervensi Krisis(Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia, 2023) ;Nur Husna Mohd Hafiz ;Mohd Zaliridzal Zakaria ;Wan Mohd Fazrul Azdi Wan Razali ;Nurhafizah binti Mohd Sukor ;Marina Munira Abdul MutalibMohamed Fauzi OthmanExposure to traumatic experiences routinely may affect the counselor's psychological health. Past studies indicated that experienced counselors tend to use self-talk as one of their psychological self-care strategies to shield themselves from the psychological impact. Self-talk that takes place during crisis intervention was found to benefit in releasing tense emotions. However, in-depth exploration of this practice as a self-care strategy through empirical study is limited. This study was conducted to deeply describe the practice of self-talk among Malaysian counselors who are involved in crisis work by routine. This qualitative research employed descriptive phenomenology as its approach. Ten participants in this study were selected through purposive sampling. The individual in-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that Malaysian counselors utilize positive self-talk during crisis interventions for selfcalming and self-reaffirmation, enabling them to maintain their professional roles without being negatively affected by their clients' traumatic experiences, or other third-party remarks. This study introduces a potentially valuable self-talk technique during intervention sessions, reducing the risk of post-traumatic stress resulting from ongoing exposure to traumatic client narratives. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Self-Adjustment Experience In Quarantine Center: A Phenomenological Study Of Person Under Surviliance During The Pandemic Of Covid-19(Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2021-10-06) ;Mohd Zaliridzal Zakaria ;Noor Ikhwatul Hassanah FadzilMuhammad Fauzi OthmanAs a method to combat the COVID 19 pandemic in Malaysia, all travelers from abroad were accorded a compulsory 14-days quarantine. Previous studies, such as Rainero et al. (2021) and Jassim et al. (2021) have found that the quarantine has brought profound impact towards their mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. This qualitative research was conducted to explore this matter. Five research participants were interviewed at the point of saturation, and they were selected by purposive sampling method for an in-depth exploration of their experiences within the phenomenological inquiry. Due to the limitations of the current pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO) which hinders “face-to-face” interviews with the respondents, interviews were conducted through telephone. Data analysis from the interviews came up with two major themes: (1) self-adjustment, and (2) acceptance. Findings have helped us to understand the phenomena of quarantine and its effect on patients specifically on how they have adjusted to the practice, how they have developed to accept the circumstance and eventually make necessary adjustments. This could help health workers and counselor practice in Malaysia to understand this situation and usher future research. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication The Impact of Exposure to Traumatic Narrative: The Lived Experience of Malaysian Counsellors(USIM Press, 2023-11-30) ;Nur Husna Mohd. Hafiz ;Mohd Zaliridzal Zakaria ;Wan Mohd Fazrul Azdi Wan Razali ;Nurhafizah Mohd Sukor ;Marina Munira Abdul MutalibMohamed Fauzi OthmanAttentively listening to the clients’ narratives and witnessing their suffering can be emotionally draining for counsellors. Counsellors may start adopting their clients’ thoughts and carrying their emotions, which can affect their belief systems. While the impact of counsellors being exposed to traumatic narratives has been extensively studied in Western countries, this psychological issue has received less attention in Malaysia. This study aims to describe Malaysian counsellors’ experiences with clients' traumatic narratives and the psychological impact of such encounters. Seven Malaysian experienced public service counsellors participated in this study. In-depth, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with them. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. The results revealed two main themes: the experience of traumatic narrative exposure and the psychological impact. Overall, the participants shared their experiences of working with traumatic cases that involved death and serious injuries to the victims. They also discussed both the positive and negative psychological impacts of these encounters on themselves. The counsellors emphasized that having the knowledge, skills, and supportive supervisors played crucial roles in helping them navigate these challenges. The study underscores the importance of equipping counsellors with specialized training and education on how to handle traumatic narrative exposures effectively, including the need for professional development programs that focus on psychological trauma care and strategies for maintaining counsellors’ mental well-being. These findings could also contribute to the development of policies and guidelines within the Malaysian counselling profession, offering extensive guidelines for self-care, setting limits on caseloads involving traumatic narratives, and defining best practices for managing such cases. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Unconditional Acceptance in Crisis Work Based on the Lived Experience of Malaysian Counselors(Global Academic Excellence, 2023) ;Nur Husna Mohd Hafiz ;Mohd Zaliridzal Zakaria ;Wan Mohd Fazrul Azdi Wan Razali ;Nurhafizah Mohd Sukor ;Marina Munira Abdul MutalibMuhammed Fauzi OthmanUnconditional acceptance is one of the core attitudes in helping professionals to establish successful therapeutic relationships. Despite unconditional acceptance was accepted in most helping professional settings, it received less attention in academic scientific research due to scholars' disagreement regarding unconditional acceptance as a single separable construct from empathy and genuineness as proposed in person-centred therapy. The knowledge gap led to the implementation of this study, employing a qualitative method, specifically descriptive phenomenology. It aims to describe Malaysian counselors' experience exercising unconditional acceptance while encountering clients from various backgrounds. The thematic analysis revealed that unconditional acceptance encompasses acceptance of the client as a person, acceptance of the client's reality experience as part of them, and acceptance of the client's traumatic reaction. The findings indicate by years of experience, Malaysian counselors show high competency in practicing unconditional acceptance. It was found that unconditional acceptance requires counselors to have empathy, increasing their ability to comprehend the clients' situation and justify their emotional reactions. Counselors especially novice counselors need proper training and guidance to increase their ability to unconditionally accept their clients, their life experience, and their traumatic reactions. This study contributes to deepening the comprehension of implementing unconditional acceptance in counseling settings. It also provides new perspectives on improving the training curriculum for counselors in Malaysia, specifically in strengthening their skills in exercising unconditional acceptance and empathy attitudes. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
