The study will use mixed methods between quantitative which use questioners that will distribute among students at UPSI those who studying and was studied Arabic language as their medium.. This study found that the teachers’ training was highly impacted on their work success in the field according to the data collection of the study. Overall, The contents, materials, facilities and curriculum which are offered by the Arabic unit of UPSI was suitable for the teacher’s training, as well as , the students were giving full intentions to all language skills and another sub educational skills during their training and practical training. Publication Communication Strategies Used by Middle Eastern Postgraduate Students at Service Encounters in University Malaya(European Journal of Language and Literature Studies, 2016) ;Suo Yan JuSuo Yan MeiCommunication strategies are important in helping L2 learners to communicate successfully when they are faced with a problem in speech production. This study looked at one of the components in Communication Competence, i.e strategy competence or the use of Communication Strategies (CS) in oral interactions among Middle Eastern students and counter staff in institute of postgraduate studies (IPS) at University of Malay. Data collected from video-tape and interviews were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It was found that the most frequently used communication strategy was the use of “modification devices‟. The other strategies used frequency were“interaction strategies”, “compensatory strategies” “avoidance strategies” and “L2-based strategies. The results showed that students used different communication strategies to overcome their communication difficulties. The main aim of using the communication strategies is to avoid communication breakdown. Consequently, Second language learners should be encouraged to use communication strategies to develop their oral skills and help them more effective in oral communication with their limited English language proficiency. Publication Cooperative Learning Strategy In Teaching Arabic For Non Native Speakers(European Center for Science Education and Research, 2017) ;Suo Yan Mei ;Suo Yan JuAyishah Binti MohdCooperative learning is a teaching strategy that can help students to be successful in academic achievement and skills, as well as can assist the students to enhance the social interaction and human relation; however, this research explored the cooperative learning strategy in teaching Arabic for non native speakers, and will show the experiences for Arabic lecturers during their applying this method for teaching Arabic at sultan Idris education university Malaysia. The researchers will depend on the survey research design. The study will use a sample of 10 lecturers who are teaching Arabic language randomly selected from Sultan Idris education University Malaysia . The method will use data collection which included a 10-items questionnaire. Results show that majority of lecturers strongly support to apply the cooperative learning during the classes and outside of classes to help the students to improve their language skills, communication skills and social interaction. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Effect of Anxiety and Self-Efficacy on Class Performance in Arabic Language Online Class(Sciedu Press, 2023) ;Suo Yan Mei ;Morufudeen Adeniyi ShittuSuo Yan juThis study aimed to explore the effect of anxiety and self-efficacy on class performance in Arabic language online classes. This study used a quantitative research approach, and the data was collected through a survey instrument administered to 148 first-year Arabic learner students enrolled in an Arabic language online class. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics as well as a structural equation model to examine the relationship between variables. The study‟s results showed that anxiety had a negative effect on class performance, while self-efficacy positively impacted class performance. Therefore, anxiety is the main contributor to Arabic online learning performance. Additionally, self-efficacy was found to have a moderating effect on the relationship between anxiety and class performance. The findings of this study suggest that anxiety and self-efficacy are important factors to consider in an online learning environment, as they can significantly impact class performance. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that educators in online learning environments implement strategies to enhance self-efficacy and reduce anxiety levels among their students. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication The Effects of Online Learning Attitude and Engagement on MFL Learners’ Performance during COVID-19 Pandemic(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2022) ;Suo Yan ju ;Suo Yan MeiHazlina AbdullahThe COVID-19 outbreak has significantly affected various activities worldwide, including education, leading to a major crisis of transferring all institutions to online learning via various educational platforms. When this happens, countless issues have arisen as everybody is adapting to the transitional phase of the traditional classroom to online teaching and learning. In Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) all students are expected to use the online platform offered by the institution such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom to continue their studies. The purpose of this research is to assess students' early experiences with these new platforms. It also investigates the relationship between students' engagement and attitudes of remote learning and their course performance, especially in foreign language learning. Students' attitudes towards Mandarin as a foreign language by using e-learning, engagement with platforms, and performance with online courses are analyzed quantitatively using the statistical program for the social sciences (SPSS). Although the findings indicate that distance learning is still in its early stages, most students' positive attitudes and willingness to participate in distance learning classes in the post-COVID19 pandemic indicate that e-learning platforms in higher education institutions have a bright future. Some guidelines to inspire foreign language learners to engage in and enjoy learning foreign languages online are by preparing a course with comprehensible texts, audio-visual resources, and a proper level of difficulties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Engagement Among Malaysian Public University Learners Of Mandarin As A Foreign Language: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Engagement Scale(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2023) ;Suo Yan ju ;Muhammad YusufSuo Yan MeiWhen imagining the ideal classroom, most teachers strive for engagement. To know if learners are engaged in their learning, teachers need to know if the learners get on with their tasks, be attentive in class, complete their assignments and actively participate in class activities. In contrast, learners feel relaxed and energetic and enjoy learning. Numerous theoretical models of engagement suggest that it is important in education and second languages but has limited adoption in foreign language learning, especially Mandarin as a foreign language. This study aims to analyse the psychometric properties of the Mandarin Foreign Language Engagement scale. A random sample of 614 individuals from selected public universities in Malaysia was used for the study. The 14 items of the Mandarin Foreign Language Engagement Scale (MFLES) factor structure was adopted from previous studies and analysed using confirmatory factor analysis. Publication Examining the Role of Anxiety, Self-efficacy, and Motivation in the Vocabulary Performance among MFL Learners(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2021) ;Suo Yan JuSuo Yan MeiVocabulary is the key to make communication possible, learners need to acquire adequate vocabulary to help them to communicate appropriately with the target language. to learn Chinese, a foreign learner must have a grasp of a large vocabulary sufficient for communication. This quantitative study examined the potential relationship between foreign language Motivation, Language anxiety, and self-efficacy, and achievement in Mandarin Chinese vocabulary. 98 Malay-speakers of Mandarin Chinese language novice learners in a public university in Malaysia participated in the study. An unannounced vocabulary test was used to check participants' Mandarin Chinese vocabulary performance. The learning motivation, Language anxiety, and self-efficacy were measured by specifically designed instruments that targeted Mandarin Chinese vocabulary acquisition. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that language anxiety and self-efficacy were positive and significant determinants of Mandarin Chinese vocabulary performance, although motivation was not. The success and failure people encounter every single day most rely on our daily psychological well-being. As such people might suffer from certain psychological issues, which on some occasions influence their everyday work. Mental variables such as self-efficacy and anxiety can cause problems for students to perform in their academic life as well. This study aims to investigate the effect of Mandarin foreign language (MFL) learners' self-efficacy and anxiety on their course achievement at public universities in Malaysia (N=590, ages ranging from 18-26 years). The data was collected through self-efficacy, anxiety scales, and the end-of-semester course grades. Language anxiety and self-efficacy were found to be positive and significant predictors of MFL course achievement in a multiple linear regression analysis. An independent simple t-test analysis revealed that there is no statistically significant difference of MFL self-efficacy and MFL anxiety based on gender. one-way ANOVA analysis revealed level three MFL learners have higher self-efficacy compared to level one learners. However, there is no significate difference in MFL anxiety among the three language proficiency levels. And explored the impact of WECHAT as a technology Innovation to teach Arabic for public Chinese Muslim adults. The research design was a quasi-experimental, quantitative study. Quantitative data were collected from 25 Public Chinese Muslims adults from different state of china, the descriptive method were descripted the percentage of participants information and paired T-Test was used to determine the significant impact on student improvement for their 4 skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) of Arabic language by WECHAT teaching. This paired t-test compared pre-and post-test results for those 25 participants. The data collected for this study from 44 year two undergraduate Level three Mandarin learners in semester 1 2016/2017 participated Online questionnaire, and data collected and analyzed according to the attitudes and effectiveness of using voice recording activities in the classroom. The study find out that voice recording activities are effective to help foreign language learners to improve oral fluency. Mandarin language teachers might consider devoting additional attention to Mandarin oral fluency teaching by using new technology like voice recording, whatApp, Wechat ect.to help Mandarin learners to improve their Mandarin oral fluency especially for learners who are shy and lack of confidence. The main purpose of this research is evaluating the effectively interesting of students for Arabic class by implement of Quizizz as a game based learning in the Arabic classroom of Sultan Idris Education University Malaysia . The researchers tested 85 students for 3 sections during Arabic course titled 'Arabic skill'. And created 20 questions relevant to the topics which are students already learned before by using Quizizz as games based learning for 20 minutes before finishing Arabic class once the students feel very tired, sleeping and bored for their Arabic class. And a set of questioners was distributed to those students regarding to their opinion of implementing Quizizz during the Arabic class. According to testing the implementing of Quizizz by researcher during the Arabic skill classroom, found that all students were very active to answer the questions which provided by researches, and more concentrated on the topic. The data were collected using questionnaire consisted 17 questions that relate with 3 Dimensions such as interaction and skill that digested from cooperative learning items were used as independent predictors while performance in Arabic class . There is big gap to fill up. Therefore, this research aims to explore the students’ perception toward teaching methods which applied by teachers during their teaching Arabic language at female ‘s mosque in Henan province of china. The study used the Mix method to explore students’ view toward teaching method, the participants of this research are 100 students from 5 female’s mosque in Henan province of china, analytical methods to analysis the Data collection which designed by questionnaires which distributed to participants from five female’s Mosque in Henan Province China. The method of data analysis is percentage and frequency method using SPSS system. The research found that: the students considered that the teachers don’t have any clear ideal about teaching method for teaching Arabic language, and majorly of their teachers only use translation and Grammar Method to teach Arabic. As a result, many universities and colleges opened Arabic for economic and trade negotiations (AETN). This course aims to cultivate such interdisciplinary talents in the Arabic language. However, this research explored the relationship between students’ needs and teaching methods which affected the teaching quality of the AETN. The study adopted a quantitative method and the data collected were analyzed through correlation by using the SPSS software. The research finding revealed that there were significant positive correlations between students’ needs and teaching methods in the teaching of AETN (r = .596, p < .01). Publication Students Attitudes And Perceptions Of Learning Mandarin Chinese Via Animated Video(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society, 2020) ;Suo Yan JuSuo Yan MeiThe health crisis of COVID-19 has forced many countries around the world to close schools, colleges, and universities. Malaysia's high education administration announced that teaching and learning would be fully online for universities starting from the 1st of June till the end of 2020. This short and long-term disruption shocked by many students and lecturers in the tertiary education sector in Malaysia. Teaching and learning and even assessments have moved fully online, resulting in lot of trials and errors and uncertainty for everyone. Covid-19 has posed significant challenges not only for lecturers, but students as well. There are a plethora of challenges such as technical difficulties, coverage, and speed of the Internet, the quality of teaching, and interactions for students who are not familiar and used to online learning. It is extremely important to attract learners and motivate them in an online learning environment in order to help learners overcome challenges and difficulties in learning. The present study explored the students’ attitudes and perceptions of learning Mandarin via animated videos at a beginner level. Animated video is used to create content covered in online lessons and integrates basic Mandarin vocabulary, sentence structures and enhances learning. Several surveys and semi-structured interviews were used to assess students’ attitudes and perceptions towards this method of instruction in online teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of the study demonstrated that students kept a positive attitude towards learning Mandarin via animated video. Students expressed that animated video not only enhanced their listening and speaking skills, it also helped them learn Mandarin vocabulary and sentence structures. The findings of this study also suggested that animated video provides Mandarin language teachers with extensive Mandarin vocabulary and sentence structures and enhances learning through fun activities in online teaching.
