Publication Correlation Between Potato And Salinity : Investigating The Myth In The Internet(Kolej Genius Insan, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, 2022-02-16) ;Afifah Binti Abdul Azmil ;Nurul `Izzan Binti Abdul Razak ;Muhammad Safwan Bin Khairudin ;Anis Safiyah Binti Hilmi ;Nur Aliya Nabila Binti Mohd FauziCurrent work focuses on investigating the rumours or myths saying that adding potatoes would be able to fix an oversalted dish, particularly soups. Based on our survey on the internet, there are various sources and blogs reporting yes and no. And the test they carried did not carry proper scientific and empirical methods. In this study, we carried out the experiment to test and find out if potatoes would be able to cause any effect on salinity through salt solution. With proper volume and mass measurement, salinity refractometer to record the salinity properly, and proper experimentation, we believe the rumours can be answered accordingly. The results showed that boiled potatoes immersed into salt solution (8%) indeed were able to reduce salinity up to 20 %. The potatoes did not act as an adsorbent, but functioned as water carriers allowing diffusion of salt ions from the concentrated solution into the less concentrated water region carried by the potatoes. In this abstract, we detailed out the methodology and further interpretation of the results.13 48 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Healthy seeds of mung bean were exposed to flavoured and flavourless e-cigarette liquid with concentrations of 0%, 10%, 15% and 25% (v/v). The genotoxic and cytogenetic impacts of the applied flavour and concentrations were assessed using mung bean as a plant bioassay, based on microscopic and macroscopic observations, which expressed as mitotic index, chromosomal abnormalities percentage, survival percentage, germination percentage, germination rate, plant growth rate, plant height, and root growth rate. Overall, flavoured and flavourless e-liquids reduced the survival percentage, germination percentage, germination rate, plant growth rate, plant height, and root growth rate of mung bean. However, observation shows flavoured e-liquid severely affects the mean plant growth rate, plant height and root growth rate compared to flavourless e-liquid. The treatment of both flavoured and flavourless e-liquids reduced mitotic index (MI). Percentage of chromosomal aberration was also increased in the dividing cells of mung bean root tips regardless of the type of flavours. Chromosome clumping and C-mitosis were the most common abnormalities found, and chromosomal bridge was the highest aberration at anaphase meanwhile anaphase stickiness was occasionally observed in the mung bean root tip dividing cells. growth. It is concluded that the morphological differences observed are probably due to the result of cytology and genomic disturbances caused by the treatment induced to the mung bean seeds.153 19 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

For synthesis of metal nanoparticles, common techniques such as photo-catalytic reduction, solvothermal methods and reduction using chemicals not only found to be costly but also consume a significant usage of toxic and hazardous chemicals. Therefore, the need for a ‘greener’ approach that utilize eco-friendly materials (organisms like plants) and processes must be implemented in order to solve this issue. In this study, we aim to use a plant extract from local Sabah tea (Camellia Sinensis) as a reducing agent for synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles. For the preparation of tea extract (Camellia Sinensis), water will be used as the solvent where thetea will be simply immersed and boiled in the water for 20 minutes. For synthesis of silver nanoparticles, the resulting tea extract will be directly added to silver nitrate and gold(III) chloride solution to allow the reduction of Ag(I) to Ag(0) and Au(III) to Au(0) to take place respectively. The successful synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles will be observed based primarily on any physical colour changes. Future studies will involve the potential application of the synthesized metal nanoparticlesin catalytic applications such as degradation of 4-nitrophenol commonly found in industrial wastewater.145 7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
